All Art Aspires Towards the Condition of Music
quote by Walter Pater
“An essay on ‘The School of Giorgione’ (Fortnightly Review, 1877), added to the third edition (1888), contains Pater’s much-quoted maxim “All art constantly aspires towards the condition of music” (i.e. the arts seek to unify subject matter and form, and music is the only art in which subject and form are seemingly one). The final paragraphs of the 1868 William Morris essay were included as the book’s ‘Conclusion’.”

Art is a beautiful form of expression and with an innate profound message…you have wonderfully crafted the art of creative expression…
That is a beautiful compliment, Nihar. Thank you so much. I am very very flattered! 🙂
very much so
🙂 !!
This piece of art may have been painted a long time ago but the idea is fresh and to the point. I like this one a lot Marina 🙂 I have only seen a very small percentage of your Space but already I am enjoying myself viewing the many different techniques and disciplines.
In short I know that I will like everything here as you are a true artist, and one that relishes the experimentation in all forms, and if you don’t mind me saying so, does this so very well too 🙂
Andro xx
My dear Andro, what a compliment! Your words have made me so happy! If my work has managed to bring a smile than I am doubly happy! I hope you do visit often as I intend doing too at your wonderful Space!! 🙂
excellent!

Love it Marina! Truly evocative of Pater’s maxim.
Thank you -again- dear for visiting and commenting! It’s always a pleasure!

So totally agree with you ! Music is very vital element in my life and I breathe through scales and notes, octaves and the pauses in between – to exist in this world. Shall stop by philosophy and compliment you on the brilliant poster ! I love it ! Shall turn to you for some part of my film – hope you would be part of my project in the near future, my dear friend ! XX
I’d be honored Mashaal!

Very cool design, Marina! Yes, I can see that. Great perspective and inspiration! 🙂
Thank you, kind FM! 🙂
Very cool! And very thought provoking… Definitely what Kandinsky was after… I think I’m going to be thinking about this for a while. 🙂
!!!!!
Could give that “ένα carré fyrkant” a whole different perspective!
🙂
I think it already has. 🙂
I’ve nominated you for Reality Blog Award.I would be honored if you accept it.

Thank you very much Cristi, I appreciate it, and congrats for you too! 🙂
Marina, I am introducing you to Jeannie & Richard, if you aren’t already acquainted. They are blog buddies, talented jewelry designers, and musicians. You seem to have music and recording/engineering in common. http://jeannierichard.wordpress.com/
Ah, I already know them and enjoy their beautiful handmade jewelry a lot, however I had no idea they were musicians too! Thank you for the introduction! They are an amazing creative couple!
🙂
Jeannie wrote a comment on my today’s post that Richard is a recording engineer and I thought of you immediately! 🙂
hi Marina,
thank you for
“All art constantly aspires
towards the condition of music”
Thank YOU Frizz!
Wonderful stuff Marina – speaking as a musician and as an art lover it was a wonderful fusion of the two. Interestingly, us composers often think that the music we make is trying to paint a picture, so there is something quite reciprocal about our two art forms, I think!
Ah, thank you Ken! You are right in most cases but I have to confess that as a painter -many times- I get a kick out of a musical piece and paint, yet with music I start from that abstract language with absolutely no image in my head, nor an intention to paint one. That was an argument I had since childhood when friends used to tell me about images they saw from music. To me every art is superior at it’s peaks [Bach, Da Vinci, Rodin, Iktinos and Kallikrates, Shakespeare, Homer etc] however music is… boundless! Who knows, maybe that’s why I paint “abstracts”! [only my views in rather poor english too!]
🙂
Beautiful and very inspirational statement!!
I always felt that and when I came across Walter Pater’s words I thought, “that’s right!”!
Thank you Linda!
Music is the language of all of the arts…like a great Soul that holds all keys, all motions, all strokes, the causes of artistic impulse….It is like the River holding all…..
Ah, so beautifully said!!!!!
Brilliant image Marina – I humbly add my thought that all art (including music) aspires towards the condition of life…
Ah, yes, for some of us, yes it does!!!!
🙂
Music inspires dance …. dance inspires art.
A bold and fluid design.
Thank you Isadora!!! [a beautiful circle huh?]

A Modern classic!!! Cheers Nonoy Manga
Ah, thank you so much Nonoy Manga!
🙂
Cool design Marina❤
Thank you, Violet!! 🙂
Your art unifies subject matter and form, since form, and/or inspiration is your subject. Whatever.. It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing, and all of your stuff has it. So that’s enough about the quote…
Wow! doo-wab-di-wab doo-wab-di-wab doo-wab-di-wab doo-wab-di-wah!
Thank you Stephen!
🙂
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great design, Marina! 🙂
Thank you, Deb!

🙂
Music is my first home and I am consistently frustrated that other languages cannot measure up. The poster is wonderful – it tells the full story.
Thank you Carl! 🙂
As Kandinsky says: “music is a superior art due to its inherent abstract language…” and he was not just any painter!
Oh, Marina, Just beautiful. You are a creative genius. (although I would have to argue that architecture is another art where subject and form are one) 🙂
Ah, thank you!!!! 🙂
No argument there! Still, music requires all senses and none at the same time -even words are music- making it superior, to me!
🙂
Very true on the words to go along with the excellent, yet simple design. Great job Marina.
Thank you so much, Frank!
🙂
Great graphic design. Very cool quote.
Cheers, Terry!
