First thing’s first:
Happy Full Moon!
As many of you already know, I am very sensitive with matters concerning animals. Be it killing them for fashion, animal testing, poaching, or endless [as it seems] acts of cruelty towards innocent beings …including eating them [a rather late revelation for me].
Following the “Animal Testing” artwork, this is the second of the series and it’s about FUR.
Killing animals for their fur is an issue that doesn’t need an introduction by me. Luckily today there is no reason to be cruel to get warm or look good. Cruelty-free fabrics and faux furs are available in many stores. So no excuse really for the suffering of so many animals for our vanity.
Instead of showing any kind [and there are many] of gruesome videos of the tortures these animals go through for us to ‘enjoy’ a fur coat, here are a few photos of animals used by the fur industry.

I could really identify with that poor cat, because the same thing happened to me once:
I was at an art gallery, and I spotted a “Kanavaki” displayed prominently at the far end of the display space. I hurried across miles of plush carpet, and finally arrived at the painting. I reached out to touch it reverently, and received a massive electrical shock, which stood my hair on end!!
People tried to tell me it was because I’d built up a huge charge of static electricity by walking across the carpet, but I said: Nope, nope, nope, that’s not the reason– it’s because Marina’s paintings are so exquisite, they always deliver a tremendous jolt!!
That’s been my experience, anyway… : )
Ah, so I see you visited the MoMA!!! I have asked them to place an antistatic cubicle for people to go in before viewing my paintings! Duh, they’re so lazy in there! 😆

Thanks for this wonderful post, Marina, to bring awareness. I don’t understand why people would want to wear fur, either, but you’re right about faux fur options being available. Marina, my mum said to me when I was a teenager that if I ever came home with a fur of any animal I will be banded from home – and I totally agree with her – have a friend with two beautiful mink coats and I struggle to walk beside her – but it’s her choice, but as grandma said, if we was meant to have fur, we would have been born with it.
The thing is that they don’t have the fur for keeping warm, just to show off …. love the work you have done here.
I will tell you a story about my mum. Many years ago a new TV channel started up in Sweden – and the man behind it is anti fur – but in one of his TV vignette – he had some fast shots of model in fur coats, so mum wrote to him and a couple of days later the vignette was gone and she got a personal letter from him where he apologized – he hadn’t notice the clip with the models.
I knew you had a wonderful mom from many things you’ve said in the past about her and mainly because of the daughter she has raised, so this comes as no surprise! Thank you for sharing the story!
Yes, it really makes no sense in killing animals just for vanity. A mink coat takes up to 60 mink to make – where’s the logic in this?!!!

Marina, we get our values in life from our parents – my mum had great values and she was very straight forward.
She wasn’t afraid to confront somebody if she thought they were doing something wrong especially animals.
She was angry on her neighbors once over how they treated their cat and told them – “Remember I love animals more than people”
One of my friend’s fur coats is down to the ankles and she has maybe used it in total 10 times. It makes me so upset – have told her about my stands, but she doesn’t see it like she as killed any minks. Very ignorant.
Yes, we truly do get our values from them and your mother was a shinning example.

Thank you Marina for reminding us and for your empathy toward those beings that share our planet. With all of the atrocities humans inflict on other humans daily it’s too easy to forget, or never be aware, of the mindless and soulless cruelty humans also inflict on animals. We need more voices and hearts like yours to help us evolve away from this barbarism…

The only “furs” here in our home, are firmly planted on all fours and meow all the time to attract attention!

A horrible time for me was when our current government brought back the Harp Seal pup hunt. It had been banned, but Prime Minister Harper made it legal again.
Hopefully our Justin Trudeau will win the next election, and helps us.
I read about that… So sad. Doesn’t make sense. One thing I have always wondered is, okay, you have greedy people who want to make money [and don’t give a dime how], but, what kind of people actually grab a harpoon or whatever else and actually strike on the head these creatures – again and again…
I know, it’s harsh. The pup seals are as adorable, and as helpless and as harmless as kittens.

I so agree with you, Isadora. I remember being at school and protesting about fur [back in the 80’s!] and to see that this industry after all these years still thrives is really disheartening… btw I love bamboo I don’t think there’s anything softer than that [not to mention healthier!] 🙂 xx

Very nice work Marina. I got one for you, where the idea from this design hit me. It looks like a bulls eye in the first image, so for leather, use a Holstein cow or any other pinto like patterned animal with a bulls eye in the design.
