[meat] “really people?”

‘Really People’ is a series designed to help raise awareness on issues concerning animal cruelty. This one is about Meat.

As many of you already know, I am very sensitive with matters concerning animals. Be it killing them for fashion, animal testing, poaching, or endless [as it seems] acts of cruelty towards innocent beings …including eating them.

Week beginning on March 23rd is Meat Free Week.
Aspiring towards a world with less suffering.
Great minds in our history have already said all that needs to be said on that matter:

“For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.” ~ Pythagoras

“Animals are my friends…and I don’t eat my friends.” ~George Bernard Shaw

“I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as the savage tribes have left off eating each other….” ~Henry David Thoreau

“We manage to swallow flesh only because we do not think of the cruel and sinful thing that we do. Cruelty… is a fundamental sin, and admits of no arguments or nice distinctions. If only we do not allow our heart to grow callous, it protests against cruelty, is always clearly heard; and yet we go on perpetrating cruelties easily, merrily, all of us – in fact, anyone who does not join in is dubbed a crank.” ~Rabindranath Tagore

“To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being. I should be unwilling to take the life of a lamb for the sake of the human body.” ~Mahatma Gandhi

“Being vegetarian here also means that we do not consume dairy and egg products, because they are products of the meat industry. If we stop consuming, they will stop producing. Only collective awakening can create enough determination for action.” ~ Thích Nhất Hạnh

“A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.” ~ Leo Tolstoy

“One should not kill a living being, nor cause it to be killed, nor should one incite another to kill. Do not injure any being, either strong or weak, in the world.” ~ Buddha

“The time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.” ~ Leonardo Da Vinci

“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages” ~ Thomas Edison

“But for the sake of some little mouthful of flesh we deprive a soul of the sun and light, and of that proportion of life and time it had been born into the world to enjoy.” ~ Plutarch

Did you also know that eating excessive amounts of meat has serious consequences for your health, meat production is detrimental to the health of our planet and that increased meat consumption has led to inhumane farming practices?

Following the Fur artwork, this is the third of the series.
…because -like G.B. Shaw- I don’t eat my friends!

  1. the message(s) here — i can definitely identify with. eventually human-kind MUST totally avoid all the cruel actions regarding animals. (kind of kidding: the comment that animals are not for our entertainment … come on, you must watch your cats!)

    • So happy to hear that! Well, yes, I can tell you that we systematically use our dog as an entertainer in our home – no joke! [she’s a natural -as most animals are! 😉 ]

  2. Let there be peace ……….

May peace radiate there in the whole sky as well as in the vast ethereal space everywhere.
May peace reign all over this earth, in water and in all herbs, trees and creepers.
May peace flow over the whole universe.
May peace be in the Supreme Being Brahman.
And may there always exist in all peace and peace alone.
Aum peace, peace and peace to us and all beings!
(Translation by Swami Abhedananda, Ramakrishna Vedanta Math, India)

    Great contribution to peace. 🙂

  3. thank you for
“For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other.

cannot reap joy and love.” ~ Pythagoras

  4. A great piece of Art Marina with an ever greater message to all who would listen.. And wishing you a wonderful weekend.. So loved all the quotes too..

People do not realise also what is being injected into animals these days.. Vaccines.. Steroids, and things to fatten them up, let alone what is in their feed.. All of this is then digested by humans.. Is it any wonder people are ill..

And so many animals are slaughtered in ways I do not wish to think about as some humans have no feelings what so ever for our Animal Kingdom… Its also a great passion of my own…

Love to you my friend and thank you for bringing awareness … Love Sue ❤

    • My dear Sue, I know it’s a great passion of your own and I’m so glad you enjoyed my work. It is so very true that we are being fed illness via those poor animals. To this day, I can not bring myself to understand some types of humans who mistreat animals. A doctor once told me that an abuser of animals is a potential abuser of people and I believe he is right. The eyes of an animal can show love, understanding, rage, pain and every emotion ours show…
Love to you too and hugs, my dear friend! xxxxxx

    • Thank you, my dear Dilip. It is a difficult issue as many of us are raised with the belief that meat is good for health and whatever happens to those animals is …normal. But it really isn’t. Have a beautiful week, my friend. 🙂

  5. With the ban on beef some of our states are halfway there! But for all the wrong reasons. They might be able to gain approval if preventing cruelty was their main objective 😉 A beautiful post and wonderful illustrations Marina.

  6. Great post Marina…….that’s an impressive list of quotes from many of the most distinguished minds of mankind……..yet in another way, it is just a “no brainer” (so obvious!) THANK YOU!

  7. I totally agree with this, but I like my meat. I hope of all my heart that it comes from farms where animals are treated with respect, the control on farms are hug here in Sweden, the animal welfare is a big issue.
I’m also so thankful to all those animals that has help medicine and research … but there is also same totally unnecessary test trails and experiments done with animals and that is not acceptable.
My mum always said to people … that she was more of animal friend than a people friend. If I ever had come home with a fur coat or details with animal fur she had banned me from her home forever.

    • Yes, my dear Viveka. I know what you mean. I used to eat meat and my parents and most of my friends still do, but I can’t help thinking of the suffering they go through, so for me it is impossible to ever go back and I really don’t miss it either. I remember you mentioning this story about your mom and fur!

      • Marina, I understand totally you thinking and feeling. Have friends that have taking the same stand as you … and I admire anyone that are able to do it.
We have killed animals for food so long as we have been walking on earth, but before the animals had so much quality of life. Today it’s all about profit making.

  8. That clock face is outstanding. Great expression.
Anyone who hasn’t read “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair should it on their list to read. Despite the publication date, it is relevant. Meat packing plants, big factory farms and feedlots creates chemically bad meat and bad food to consume. Humanely pasture fed/free range raising/respectful care, and humane slaughter can be done. Not everyone can stay healthy on a vegetarian only diet. Each must find what works chemically with their body. What ever the choice, plant or animal, it must be remembered that both live things feel warmth, fear, respond to threat of danger causing chemical changes in the organism, and they both feel pain. (scientific facts) Live gently and take only what you must. Waste not. Something ceased to exist so you could survive.

      • I’ve already quite familiar with them, but do appreciate your concern. This is not a new controversy. Very much a vegetarian for quite a while. (It was a big thing in the 60-70’s) It doesn’t always work long term for all individual bodies’ needs. People need to do what is best for them and let others find their own way, too. Live and let live. Please keep an eye on your thyroid as you get older.
I really do like your designs on these products. You have a good eye and style.

        • Live and let live is also my motto and I’m aware of how far back this controversy goes. [even if I do not see it as a controversy] Be well and thank you for your kind words!! 🙂
          ps thyroid under control! 😉

            • Thankfully, nowadays a vegan can find plenty to sustain a healthy body! Super foods and shoots alone are a great source of nutrients. Also thankfully, due to my autoimmune ownership, I take fairly regular blood tests to make sure everything [vitamins too] are perfectly balanced! 😉
I hope you’ll enjoy my next endeavor! 🙂

      • Oh, forgot. You really should read Upton Sinclair’s book if you haven’t. If that doesn’t put you off meat nothing will. No doubt the early PETA organization people traveled with it. Used to be required reading in High Schools. Maybe it should be again.

          • Your quotes are much better persuasion than PETA which takes in a great deal of money yet it benefits very few animals – other than the employed ones. Hang in there kid. You’re got a noble heart and soul. Go with the quotes.

            • 🙂 I agree about the quotes – and it was a first for me too. The only ones I knew were Buddha’s, Ghandi’s and Shaw’s. It was a pleasant surprise for me to find the one’s from ‘home’ [Plutarch and Pythagoras].
Enjoy a wonderful Friday and weekend. 🙂

              • It’s a long tradition. Many do recognize that all living things have a life force and deserve respect. When we stop noticing things around us – the small June Bug struggling upside down on his back or that earthworm frantic on a hot sidewalk, we lose a bit of our own humanity.
One thing about being vegetarian is that it does make people become aware of their own bodies – sometimes for the first time. Really important. WIth luck it raises their awareness of other natural things, too. We are living far too much in little windowless boxes. So everyone outside appreciate and care for what we’ve got. Hope your weekend is bright and wonderful

  9. If only people would finally understand that is absolutely vital to change our habit and become vegetarian…
Is that only a dream? What shall come before this happen?
Love to you, dearest friend (today was your “special-day”) ❤ :-)c

    • Ah, Frank, thank you so much! I found this to be quite challenging, so I’m very happy you liked it.
About the quotes, I was pleasantly surprised to find quotes about this as far back as Ancient Greek times!
Have a beautiful Wednesday, my friend. 🙂

  10. Hi Marina :
