I was planing to post a watercolor painting however, as I was finishing the post, the earth moved and not in a nice way!
A strong quake shook us here in Athens bringing back memories of the big one in 1999.

This one was ‘just’ 5.1R however the epicenter was so close and near the surface that it felt like the building was being …uprooted – shaking up and down and sideways!
One of the frightening things about such earthquakes is the rumbling sound while it lasts [and those seconds seem so very long!].

Anyway, our eyes and ears are focused on the Athens Institute of Geodynamics for updates. So far, however unpleasant it may be or sound, we’re having many aftershocks ranging from 2.5 to 4.4 on the Richter scale, which makes seismologists say that it was most likely the main one. Still, for a couple of days, we have to be alert…

…made it across the ocean, so the only thing I can think of is that the UK is so eager on Brexit that they block their ears on anything European!!!! 😉 😉 🤣😂🤣😂🤣 Joking! It wasn’t a big one however it shook us pretty hard because we were very near the epicenter and there were considerations that this would wake other faults in the area. All good though. The critical 48 hours have passed, however a 4+R is still expected within a month… which is okay as long as it doesn’t wake any nearby faults! 😉

Hope it is over, sometimes along the St Lawence river there will be some quakes, usually not more than 4 or 4,5 on the the Richter scale, one time, many years ago, in MOntreal we felt one that happened in Charlevoix about 600 km from here and not a funny feeling when you feel that stange shaking…but keep painting, well I am better at telling it than doing it..:)

I thought of you and Oannes right away when I heard about the earthquake. I’ve often wondered what a pairing would look like if a painter were to “paint” an earthquake or the effects of the shaking of an earthquake – and perhaps your photos of seismographs offers a clue. Anyway, glad you are okay. Take care.
Funny I was thinking that… Sometime after the earthquake, when I restarted my computer and began looking for images for the event, I thought it would have been funny if the tremor had caught me painting! 😉 Thanks, my friend. Even though it wasn’t a big one we were right next to the epicenter so it was quite frightening at the time. We’re still on the wait for more 4s but knowing yesterdays was the main one, is reassuring.

They’re my first thought always when something like that happens. On the big one back in ’99, at the first shock I took Igor [our beautiful shorthair pointer – no longer with us] in my arms and went to a safe place. I was amazed afterwards when we all left the building that there were people who’d left their pets behind… I understand how panic can make people react but this is elementary. They completely depend on us…
Almost 24hrs have passed and all’s well. One more day to feel safer. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

I’m in Ohio, not exactly earthquake country. I think it was the summer of 1980 I was working on our T-Bucket in the driveway. I was laying on the ground when it moved with me under the car. Everything on the walls in the garage clanked around and my dad comes out. We just stared at each other because it’s Ohio…
!!!…I doubt it’s something one could get used to. It’s like an accident, you’re in shock when it happens but after a while you forget! 😉 Still, sounds like a nice place to be, Ohio! 🙂

The two things I fear most are Cyclones & Earthquakes; having experienced both I can well understand that you feel apprehensive.
Glad in was a relatively small one but one never knows if it’s a precursor for the big one, so with luck nature or the Gods are only playing games.
Be safe and have a glass of vino, if nothing else it will calm the mind 🍷🙂
Both?!!!!! I’ve only experienced extremely strong winds but not a cyclone of great magnitude.Thankfully most seismologists say the it was the main one, so we’re just ‘happy’ to be feeling lots of smaller aftershocks… A glass of vino is probably a good idea! 😉 Cheers! 😉 🙂
Yes, the Cyclone nearly killed me and the other just reminded me we are all nature’s play things. Until you see a bottle of Malt whisky fall off the shelf and then it makes for some very rude comments 😏

Horrible aren’t they? They make you feel numb and helpless… I particularly hate the rumbling sound that goes with them. Eventhough it was a 5.1R [not too strong], the epicenter was near the surface [2km!] and very near Athens, so it felt strong and quite violent. Despite that, there were no casualties and just a couple of damages to old abandoned buildings. We both live in seismic cities, so I suppose we have to learn to live with them… huh?! xoxo
I haven’t experienced one other than through the television, but I can imagine the horror of it. Here in Florida it is the dreaded hurricane, mother nature has all kinds of tricks in store for us.
Oh, yes, mother nature has many ways to remind us that we’re just visitors here and should respect her!

I liked in the San Francisco area for ten years. We had shocks periodically. Always unnerving.
