Σαν σήμερα, στις 23 Φεβρυαρίου του 1685 γεννήθηκε ο George Friedrich Handel, ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους συνθέτες των εποχών. Έχουμε ένα μικρό αφιέρωμα σ’ αυτόν [οποιοδήποτε αφιέρωμα θα ήταν μικρό, για ένα έργο που περιλαμβάνει …42 όπερες, 25 ορατόρια και 120 καντάτες, εκτός όλων των άλλων!]. Ξεκινάμε με τον Sviatoslav Richter στην σουίτα για keyboard νούμερο 2 σε Φα.

On this date, February 23, 1685, George Friedrich Handel, one of the greatest composers of the time, was born. We have a little tribute to him – any tribute would be little, for such a legacy … 42 operas, 25 oratorios and 120 cantatas, among all others!. We start with Sviatoslav Richter, on the Keyboard Suite Number 2.

The Ways of Zion Do Mourn

Το The Ways Of Zion Do Mourn, ήταν ένας ύμνος που ακούστηκε στην νεκρώσιμη ακολουθία για την βασίλισσα Caroline. Ο Handel ολοκλήρωσε και παρουσίασε το έργο, διάρκειας μιας ολόκληρης πράξης ορατόριου, σε διάστημα 5 ημερών…Από την Monteverdi Choir και την Monteverdi Orchestra υπό τον John Eliot Gardiner, ακούμε δυο αποσπάσματα:
-1. Their bodies are buried in peace
-2. They shall receive a glorious kingdom

The Ways Of Zion Do Mourn was an anthem heard at the funeral service for Queen Caroline. Handel completed and presented the project, lasting an entire act of an oratorio, within five days… Here are two excerpts with the Monteverdi Choir and the Monteverdi Orchestra directed by John Eliot Gardiner:

-2. They shall receive a glorious kingdom

Ένα από τα περίφημα Concerti Grossi του Handel [μουσική φόρμα που περιλαμβάνει ορχήστρα και περισσότερα του ενός σολιστικά όργανα]. Το ακούμε από την Capella Istropolitana υπό τον Joesef Copelman.

One of the glorious Concerti Grossi by Handel [a musical form based on orchestra and more than one solo instruments]. The Capella Istropolitana is directed by Josef Copelman.

Από την Jephtha, το τελευταίο ορατόριο που συνέθεσε ο GFH, ακούμε την εισαγωγή και την άρια ‘Scenes of horror, scenes of woe’ [Anne Sophie Von Otter – φωτό]. Τους English Baroque Soloists και την Monteverdi Choir διευθύνει ο John Eliot Gardiner
Στη συνέχεια την άρια “Thais Led The Way” [Donna Brown] απ΄το “αφηγηματικό” έργο του Handel Alexander’s Feast – The Power Of Music, βασισμένο σε κείμενο του John Dryden. Τους English Baroque Soloists και την Monteverdi Choir διευθύνει ο John Eliot Gardiner.
Τέλος, η “πολεμική” άρια ‘Call forth thy pow’rs, my soul’ [Ryland Davies] από το ορατόριο Judas Maccabaeus. Την Wandsworth School Choir και την English Chamber Orchestra διευθύνει ο Sir Charles Mackerras.

From Jephtha, the last oratorio composed by GFH, we have the introduction and the aria ‘Scenes of horror, scenes of woe’ [Anne Sophie Von Otter – photo]. The English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir are directed by John Eliot Gardiner
Next up is “Thais Led The Way” [Donna Brown] from Handel’s “narrative” work Alexander’s Feast – The Power Of Music, based on a text by John Dryden. The English Baroque Soloists and the Monteverdi Choir are directed by John Eliot Gardiner.
Finally, the “battle” aria ‘Call forth thy pow’rs, my soul’ [Ryland Davies] from the oratorio Judas Maccabaeus. The Wandsworth School Choir and the English Chamber Orchestra are led by Sir Charles Mackerras.

Ολοκληρώνω το μικρό μου αφιέρωμα στον G. F. Handel με το μνημειώδες κονσέρτο του για εκκλησιαστικό όργανο Νο 1 σε σολ ελάσσονα. Στο όργανο ο Eberhard Kraus, την Camerata Romana διευθύνει ο Eugen Duvier.

I conclude my little tribute to G. F. Handel with the monumental concert for church organ No. 1 in G minor. Eberhad Kraus is on the organ, Camerata Romana is directed by Eugen Duvier.
