Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev

Russian Soviet composer, pianist and conductor

Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev

was born on 27 April 1798,
in Sontsovka, Russia

Oannes is preparing a tribute on the birthday of this very favorite composer of mine, but I wanted to share the first work of his I ever heard [over and over to the point of melting the vinyl!] as a child.
In the version I heard it too, as there have been many narrators… Bowie included.

The “symphonic fairy tale for children”,
he wrote, in 1936.

Peter and the Wolf, Op. 67

Narrator: Peter Ustinov
Philharmonia Orchestra • cond. Herbert Von Karajan

Fairy tales about wolves over the years have given them a bad name. Even as a child -however fond I was of this musical piece- I thought they were treated unjustly, so I would be remiss if I didn’t put a good word for these majestic beings. Wolves play a vital role in maintaining a balance in the ecosystem.
Take a look at The Wolf Conservation Center* to understand more about wolves and their significance in our environment and the human role in protecting their future.
*Founded by Hélène Grimaud in 1999, the Wolf Conservation Center (WCC) is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit environmental education organization working to protect and preserve wolves in North America through science-based education, advocacy, and participation in the federal recovery and release programs for two critically endangered wolf species – the Mexican gray wolf and red wolf.  The WCC’s three ‘ambassador wolves‘ reside on exhibit where they help teach the public about wolves and their vital role in the environment. Through wolves, the WCC teaches the broader message of conservation, ecological balance, and personal responsibility for improved human stewardship of our World.

  1. Such a lovely post, Marina. I’ve always loved this amazingly descriptive composition. Wolves are such beautiful animals and your last photo shows a softer side. Hugs to you. Stay safe and happy. 😘🤗

  2. Loved the video.. Wolves have always been part of my totem animal connection… We could all learn well from their pack mentality and Wolves play a huge role in our eco system…
Many thanks for highlighting them….. They have been given such bad press, for all the wrong reasons…
Love and Hugs my dear Marina…. Again it all comes down to misinformation and mans greed…. and Ignorance… ❤

    • Oh, now 4 Paws up is the greatest reward!
So glad you enjoyed this. Eventhough I’ve always enjoyed the music, the story about the wolf made me sad, so… 😉
