A tribute for Gary Brooker on his Birthday with a Procol Harum Podcast by Oannes
On this date, May 29, 1945, Gary Brooker, founder, singer piano player and principal composer of Procol Harum, was born in London. They group may be considered, along with Moody Blues, the harbingers of progressive [they were after all among the first to experiment with a symphony orchestra], but the essence of Procol Harum‘s music has always been the grandiose simplicity of Gary Brooker‘s songwriting. We hear some examples.

Oh, this sure stirs up some ghosts for me. Friendly ones.
Oh, glad to hear they’re friendly ones!!!! 😉🙂
Gary Brooker is a great songwriter. One of my favorites songs is “Conquistador”. Since I grew up in New Mexico with the legacy of the Conquistadors, the lyrics and surrealness of the song really nails the feelings of animosity between people of Spanish decent and the Pueblo Indians in north-central New Mexico.
He is a great songwriter indeed and agree with you on Conquistador. Hope you’re enjoying a beautiful weekend. 🙂
