Perhaps the mutual admiration and friendship between Brian Wilson and Paul McCartney is not irrelevant to the fact that they were born two days apart. Brian Wilson, the genius composer – leader of the Beach Boys, studio wiz & multi-instrumentalist, was born on this date, June 20, 1942.
A sign of the creative explosion that was taking place in the 1960s, is that, artists like Brian Wilson or Jagger – Richards, spent most part of the decade being at the heights of their creative powers, while …facing some “other” people’s backs.
Brian would follow a more “elliptical” course than other leading figures of this generation, because of mental health problems from the mid – late 60s on, the reason for that being the extensive use of psychoactive substances.
However, he would continue to record some great music, from the late ’80s onwards, as a solo artist.
So here’s a mix of Beach Boys classics and solo Wilson‘s recordings, some of the whom are reworkings of ’60s songs.

  1. I remember the Beach Boys being so cool when I was a kid. Not only did they sound cool, they looked cool. Their California vibes were very exotic to this desert boy. I think the Beach Boys had a lot of influence on my brother’s decision to join the Navy around 1970, which eventually landed him in San Diego California where he has lived for the past 40 years.

  2. I seem to recall that you are not much on seeing movies but I would recommend an exception for this one: Love and Mercy. I spellbinding story about Brian Wilson. Brian was a consultant on this and was the vocal coach as well. When he finally saw it, it scared him, because he said it was so real. This movie will take you to every emotion it’s possible to experience. But in the end you will be uplifted. And every single performance is masterful.

    • Actually we were both cinema lovers but after a time -with very few exceptions- we took to good ol’ dvd… We’ll look it up! I’d love to watch it! I just saw an interview they gave about the film [Brian, Cusack and Pohlad].

      • It’s astounding. It’s on DVD, Blu-ray, streaming, anything you like. When we saw Brian Wilson perform, he mentioned it several times and always called it “my movie.“ His life is a mixture of tragedy and triumph. The movie shows it faithfully. In the end, it is love that saved him. Now there’s a lesson. There is a multi cd set that contains many many outtakes from the Pet Sounds sessions. If you ever want to get in on a view of the creative process, it is something to listen to. Also available online from iTunes, Amazon music, etc.

  3. Somewhere I read that Paul McCartney had commented that he cannot hear “God Only Knows” without a tear coming to his eye. He considers it one of the best songs ever written. Me too. Along with “Caroline, No.” The Muse and I saw one of Brian‘s last performances before he hung up his touring hat. He and his band, with Al Jardine by his side, Al’s son at his other side, and Brian’s daughter on keyboards, did all of Pet Sounds from beginning to end. It was a magic moment. There were tears.
