July 7, 1887,
in Vitebsk, Russia*
* He was born in a Lithuanian Jewish Hassidic family in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk (Belarus, during that time was part of the Russian Empire)

An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic tapestries and fine art prints.
Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern European Jewish folk culture. In Paris, he associated with Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and encountered Fauvism and Cubism. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country’s most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1923.
Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra.

Very interesting. Btw, many scenes in Roman Polanski’s 1967 movie, Fearless Vampire Killers (Dance of the Vampires) portray traces from works of this great Russian-Jewish artist.

Spent years living in Vence and Grasse, a next door neighbour, so to speak, visiting Fondation Maeght, a world famous museum in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. where lives a lot of his work as a result of Aimé Maeght meeting Marc Chagall in October 1947 Chagal at the opening of his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art of the City … For me a constant treat with every visit.

I met a young RC nun from Belarus who was touring in Canada thanks to the Boyzz at RCC. Such stunning beauty I had never beheld b4. So Chagall was from Belarus too. I can see that now, although did not know. Always assumed he was merely French! Do you say they are part Russian if the place they were born is no longer Russian? I guess… 🙂

I love Chagall’s work. I have a fantasy that my artist ancestor, Abraham Hankins knew him. 😀 Both were born in what is now Belarus and were in Paris, but Hankins ended up in Philadelphia.
