Marc Chagall [1887 – 1985]

Self Portrait
Russian-French painter, lithographer, etcher and designer.

Marc Chagall

was born,
July 7, 1887,
in Vitebsk, Russia*

* He was born in a Lithuanian Jewish Hassidic family in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk (Belarus, during that time was part of the Russian Empire)

An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic tapestries and fine art prints.
Before World War I, he travelled between Saint Petersburg, Paris, and Berlin. During this period he created his own mixture and style of modern art based on his idea of Eastern European Jewish folk culture. In Paris, he associated with Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and encountered Fauvism and Cubism. He spent the wartime years in Soviet Belarus, becoming one of the country’s most distinguished artists and a member of the modernist avant-garde, founding the Vitebsk Arts College before leaving again for Paris in 1923.
Using the medium of stained glass, he produced windows for the cathedrals of Reims and Metz, windows for the UN and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Jerusalem Windows in Israel. He also did large-scale paintings, including part of the ceiling of the Paris Opéra.

  2. These are fascinating, intriguing, mysterious, and the list goes on. I think each piece deserves some time to ponder and absorb. Wonderful artist, Marina! Love and hugs, dear friend. xoxoxo

  3. Thank you for this wonderful collection. He is one of my favorites!! Enjoy your weekend xo

  4. Oh wow… While I had seen a few of these paintings before.. I had not seen many of them Marina.. I could spend an age in a gallery, standing back devouring their content.. SO, much within them all… And each speaking to me also. As you get inside the mind of the painter… or at least try to 😀
Loved you sharing his work….. Thank YOU dearest Friend… Enjoy the rest of your week 😀 ❤

    Much love your way 💚🙏💚

  5. Very interesting. Btw, many scenes in Roman Polanski’s 1967 movie, Fearless Vampire Killers (Dance of the Vampires) portray traces from works of this great Russian-Jewish artist.

  6. Spent years living in Vence and Grasse, a next door neighbour, so to speak, visiting Fondation Maeght, a world famous museum in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. where lives a lot of his work as a result of Aimé Maeght meeting Marc Chagall in October 1947 Chagal at the opening of his retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art of the City … For me a constant treat with every visit.

    • You are right, however it was, back then. More precisely he was born in Liozna, near the city of Vitebsk (Belarus, then part of the Russian Empire). [source: wikipedia]

      • Sorry for my note and thank you for your efforts. Actually, Marina, for most of the people Belarus is unknown country and they associate it with Russia. My note was just for you, but when I realized you know about that, I was sorry.
        Have a nice day! 🙂

        • I know what you mean. When I was studying in England I had people ask where Greece is! You were right and it needed to be clarified, so I added that explanation. Thank you. You too! 🙂

  7. Brilliant post, Marina! I adore the Self Portrait at the top.
Just another artist who painted while he slept.
I’m loving this Artists Series you’ve been doing! You are teaching me a lot, and giving me some great ideas (for Art Gowns drawings.. LOL)
The music went perfect with this artists work. It’s interesting to wonder how he would have painted Hera!!
    Much love!

  8. I met a young RC nun from Belarus who was touring in Canada thanks to the Boyzz at RCC. Such stunning beauty I had never beheld b4. So Chagall was from Belarus too. I can see that now, although did not know. Always assumed he was merely French! Do you say they are part Russian if the place they were born is no longer Russian? I guess… 🙂

    Amazing assortment.

    • Wikipedia does, but it specifies [something that I added so that it clarifies it] that at the time he was born, it was part of the Russian Empire.
Thank you, my dear friend! So glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

  9. I love Chagall’s work. I have a fantasy that my artist ancestor, Abraham Hankins knew him. 😀 Both were born in what is now Belarus and were in Paris, but Hankins ended up in Philadelphia.

  10. So excellent Marina. One of my favorite artists, beautiful paintings and narrative. I wanted to share this but couldn’t, congratulations on a beautiful article! ❤️🤗🥰🌸🌹🌺🌼💕💞
