Laika always takes me back to my childhood. The idea of a doggy traveling in space filled me with joy. If only it was as innocent as that… Laika was a 3yr old stray mutt picked from the streets of Moscow to be the occupant of the Soviet spacecraft Sputnik 2, launched into outer space. A trip with no return. As Dimitri Malashenkov, [one of the scientists behind the Sputnik 2 mission] revealed, Laika had died by the fourth circuit of flight from overheating. Sputnik 2 was not designed to be retrievable, and Laika had always been intended to die. November 3, 1957, Laika entered orbit.

The video [directed by Niels Gråbøl and Ulrik Crone] is dedicated to Laika (✝1957), the first living creature to enter orbit. Filmed on location in Moscow at -25°C.

❝ Thinking about you
Constantly thinking about you
Thinking about you

I’ve been thinking too much about you
See the sunset with no sleep at all
Constantly thinking about you
And I can’t get through this at all

Thinking about you
Thinking about you

I’ve been thinking too much about you
I’ve been staring at the floor
I’ve listened to all the tunes that I love
But made me feel quite blue

I’ve been thinking too much about you
See the sunset with no sleep at all
Constantly thinking about you
And I can’t get through this at all

Thinking about you

Thinking too much about you
See the sunset with no sleep at all
And I’m constantly thinking about you
And I can’t get through this at all

Constantly thinking about you
Constantly thinking about you
And I can’t get through this at all ❞

and this:

I drew this some time after we lost Loretta. I saw her swimming in a vast dark ocean, helpless. I imagined Laika being swallowed by the vast emptiness. Both lost somewhere
…nice I hope.

Coincidentally today is the International Dog Day!

Enjoy!

Stay Safe!

  1. Love that drawing. We met when Loretta was not well. My heart went out to you. I lost my Pupkin around that time.
Loretta was a very pretty doggie! I know how much you loved her. Now, you have Hera, who loves you, too!
Now, I have J&J, who boss me around, relentlessly. That’s cat love for ya!

    • I remember…. but somehow they’re always with us, aren’t they. I still feed sad though when I think of her.
Relentlessly bossed around but also loved! 😉

  2. Sometimes I wonder if the brain is just the transmitter and the memories are actually a soul ‘snapshot’… i guess we’ll find out someday… somewhere… Today I’m lost in Russia… prerevolutionary… Anna Fedorova et al. 🙂

    • Yes, I know but of those beings, Laika was the one that stole children’s hearts 😉 …and this was about childhood nostalgia. Of course I had to comment on the cruelty of it. …and then realized it was International Dog Day. Coincidences!😉
      Animals sacrificing for science…
      Sad, indeed.

      • Yes, I’ve been doing some childhood nostalgia too… Stingray has a ‘sounds of summer’ specifically 1970s… bringing back a lot of memories… my AM radio was my only link to civilization… which these days I must put inverted commas around… ‘civilization’ 🙂😲🤪😵🥴😀😁
