✳︎ December 13, 14: Geminids Meteor Shower. The Geminids is the king of the meteor showers. It is considered by many to be the best shower in the heavens, producing up to 120 multicolored meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by debris left behind by an asteroid known as 3200 Phaethon, which was discovered in 1982. The shower runs annually from December 7-17. It peaks this year on the night of the 13th and morning of the 14th. The morning of the 15th could also be nearly as active this year.

✳︎ December 21: December Solstice • 10:02 UTC. The first day of winter (winter solstice) in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of summer (summer solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere.
✳︎ December 21, 22: Ursids Meteor Shower. The Ursids is a minor meteor shower producing about 5-10 meteors per hour. It is produced by dust grains left behind by comet Tuttle, which was first discovered in 1790. The shower runs annually from December 17-25. It peaks this year on the the night of the 21st and morning of the 22nd.
✳︎ December 30: Full Moon • 03:30 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Cold Moon because this is the time of year when the cold winter air settles in and the nights become long and dark. This moon has also been known as the Long Nights Moon and the Moon Before Yule.

  5. Had to pop over and see your calendar turn Marina – I especially like the yellow tones in the shadows as Autumn moves into the past! (I’m crocheting a scarf in that colour at the moment 😉 ) Always good to know what celestial events are in store – so much so I downloaded the Stellarium app. As for Sibelius – he knew how dark December is but still the music reaches to the heavens. Happy December to you Marina (we have just finished another lockdown only to be confined to another restrictive tier with just 5 days of Christmas to go mad!!)

      We’re also under lockdown which is now being extended to the 12th, maybe 21st and to the more optimists after Easter!!!! I sincerely hope they know what they’re doing, although I doubt it…🙄

  10. What a funny coincidence– I’m having fruit salad for lunch today and I’m including apples, cranberries, oranges, tangerines, clementines, pears, persimmons, pomegranates, and quinces!!

    (OK, OK, I would have forgotten the quinces if it weren’t for your very helpful checklist.)

  14. Got to love the sounds that Sibelius has given us. Who doesn’t love Finlandia! As I listen to his music, I was taken away from the occasion – Happy December! I love oranges and fennel! And the month and the year almost end with a full moon. Oh so close! May the new month bring you many joys. Yamas!
