Ανήμερα εθνικής επετείου, ακούμε το παλαιότερο καταγεγραμμένο έργο ελληνικής “λόγιας μουσικής” που αντλεί υλικό και έμπνευση από τη δημοτική παράδοση. Το θαυμάσιο “Ξύπνημα του Κλέφτη” του Κερκυραίου συνθέτη Ιωσήφ Λιβεράλη [1820-1899], γραμμένο το 1847 και άγνωστο μέχρι πρόσφατα, ανακαλύφθηκε και πρωτόγινε ακουστό χάρη στην εργασία του μουσικολόγου Γιώργου Λεωτσάκου. Μαζί με άλλα “χαμένα” έργα Ελλήνων συνθετών του 19ου αι. κυκλοφόρησε στο ανεκτίμητο άλμπουμ Λύχνος Υπό τον Μόδιον – Έργα Ελλήνων Συνθετών για Πιάνο 1847-1908.
Προκύπτει ότι η ελληνική “σοβαρά μουσική” ήταν ενήμερη του πλούτου της δημοσικής πολύ νωρίτερα από ότι την ήθελαν [ = το 1908] οι αγκυλώσεις της “Εθνικής Σχολής” του Μανώλη Καλομοίρη.

On the day of our national anniversary [we celebrate the Annunciation and the start of the Greek revolution against Ottoman rule in 1821], we hear the oldest recorded work of intellectual Greek music that draws material and inspiration from traditional music. The wonderful “The Awakening of the Thief“ by the Corfiot composer Joseph Liberalis [1820-1899], written in 1847 and unknown until recently, was discovered and first heard thanks to the work of the musicologist George Leotsakos. Along with other “lost” works by Greek composers of the 19th c. released on the priceless album Lychnos Under Modion – Works by Greek Composers for Piano 1847-1908.
It appears that Greek “classical music” was aware of the wealth of traditional music much earlier [= in 1908] then the rigid “National School” of Manolis Kalomyris would like to admit.
