I just found out that Gary Brooker, one of my favorite musicians in my teenage years, has died at the age of 76. I’m reposting a podcast I made last year on his birthday.

On this date, May 29, 1945, Gary Brooker, founder, singer piano player and principal composer of Procol Harum, was born in London. They group may be considered, along with Moody Blues, the harbingers of progressive [they were after all among the first to experiment with a symphony orchestra], but the essence of Procol Harum‘s music has always been the grandiose simplicity of Gary Brooker‘s songwriting.
We hear some examples.
