Μια ιστορία πολιτικής ίντριγκας, προδομένης φιλίας και παράνομου έρωτα, βασισμένη σε πραγματικό γεγονός [η δολοφονία του βασιλιά της Σουηδίας Γουσταύου Γ’ στη διάρκεια ενός χορού μεταμφιεσμένων] γίνεται αφορμή για μια από τις πιο πλούσιες μελωδικά όπερες του Βέρντι. Στoυς κύριους ρόλους εδώ ο τενόρος Giuseppe Di Stefano [Riccardo – το “σκηνικό” όνομα που δόθηκε στον ηγεμόνα από την λογοκρισία] η σοπράνο Maria Callas [Amelia – σύζυγος του Renato, φίλου του Riccardo, με την οποία ο τελευταίος είναι κρυφά ερωτευμένος], και ο βαρύτονος Tito Gobbi [Renato].

A story of political intrigue, betrayed friendship and illicit love, based on an actual event [the assassination of Sweden’s King Gustav III during a masquerade dance] becomes the occasion for one of Verdi’s most melodic operas. On the main roles here, the tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano [Riccardo – the scenic name given to the ruler by censorship] the soprano Maria Callas [Amelia – wife of Renato, friend of Riccardo, with whom the latter is secretly in love], and the baritone Tito Gobbi [Renato].
