Marina Kanavaki – As Above, So Below

I  am delighted to welcome the Year 2020 with Marina Kanavaki, a dear blogger friend.   Over the years, Marina has inspired me to view art and creative endeavour via the lens of her mantra, “Art Toward a Happy Day.”

Marina showcased her watercolour paintings “As Above So Below” at the Art Estate Gallery March – April 2019 to great reviews.  When I heard that her 2020 Calendar reflected this amazing exhibition, I contacted Marina directly so that I would receive my As Above So Below calendar as a celebration of entering a fresh new year of exciting possibilities and opportunities.

Thank you, Marina, for your remarkable dedication to art, music, and building a vibrant community.

When you meet Marina, you will see for yourself that her artistic expression is “Art Toward a Happy Day.”

It’s my honour and pleasure to introduce the Greek artist Marina Kanavaki and her fine art to you. Many years ago Marina and I got to know each other through WordPress. Marina is not only a talented painter but also a graphic designer and musician. I’m sure that some of you are already familiar with her beautiful art. Nevertheless I would like to give her a stage on my blog too. Marina was so kind to let me use her biography text and her photo’s. Please respect the copyright of her work. May you enjoy her art as much as I do.

About Marina:

Painter, graphic designer and musician, in no particular order.

I suppose music was my first love. I would literally crawl up to the piano stool and put my ear on the keys to hear the sounds and their combinations. Magic. Living in a home that classical [mainly] music was part of a daily ritual, really broadened my horizons. I studied piano and musical theory at the National Conservatory and continued to write my own music.

Then painting. Thankfully, my dad, being an artist himself, stood up for me when narrow-minded teachers at school thought there was something wrong with me when I would completely erase outlined drawings we were supposed to fill in with colour, and then painted my own on top! 😉 He was the owner of a creative design center and by the time I finished studies, I decided to go to England to study Graphic Design.
4 years later, I returned to Greece, to my father’s company, Schima Ltd, now Anmar [https://anmarcreative.com/], which is where I still work, designing for various companies and clients.

Since my return from England, I’ve had several solo & group painting exhibitions, and released one solo album [Pote & Tipota – Never & Nothing] which was when I met my partner in life, and music, Oannes (Socratis – [https://oannes.gr/] ), a brilliant musician with a huge background. To my good fortune, he was at the time a musical editor and had come to interview me about my album. Our lives & music blended perfectly, so forming MK-O [Marina Kanavaki – Oannes] [http://www.mk-o.com/] came naturally. We have since released 5 albums of our music.

My love for painting and design also vents to various projects. One of them is designing selected paintings to everyday items [from apparel and gadgets to furniture and home decor]. Society 6 [https://society6.com/marinakanavaki] gave me the opportunity of doing this without having to deal with the commercial part.
However creativity will never ask how and when and will always keep us on our feet, so I know there are many things to explore.

“I’m the proud owner of Marina Kanavaki’s 2017 calendar: “Twelve Months: A Journey Entranced.” It’s lovely, and I’m delighted.

I bought the Wall Calendar (the calendar is also available as a digest-sized planner). The Wall Calendar is tabloid-sized, 11” wide by 17” high, and stands out beautifully on any wall.

Each month features a painting that takes up most of the page: approximately 11” by 15”. The effect is like having a lovely painting on your wall, with a tidy little calendar at the bottom.

Every month you flip the page to reveal a new painting— it’s like having your own rotating art gallery.

The paintings are dynamic, and the colors are absolutely gorgeous. Each month uses the associated birthstone (and color) as its theme, and also incorporates the month number (April being “4,” for example). The moon is featured in many of the paintings, creating a dramatic focal point.

The paintings themselves are so bold and colorful, they radiate energy into the room, and create a mood. I can picture visitors gravitating to the calendar, just as one is drawn to a painting in someone’s home. I doubt there are many calendars that could spark a conversation about art— but this one definitely could!

If you’re a Marina Kanavaki fan (like me), this calendar will allow you to bring some of her vibrancy, passion, sense of fun, and joie de vivre into your home. Good art and a good influence— you can’t beat that combination.

Most calendars get discarded at the end of the year. Not this one. I plan to turn mine into a Marina Kanavaki Art Gallery. Maybe I’ll charge admission, and become rich… : )

My thanks to Marina for a beautiful calendar. It’s certainly my pleasure to write this testimonial.”

I also bought them in Paths of Color [turquoise, blue and green] but I’ll show those at another time!

I tested the look with various shoes & ended up with a short heel, which is better than these sandals.

Thanks, Marina! I feel so super cool!”

“My new favorite bag – artwork made by Marina

For the last month I have enjoyed Marina Kanavakis beautiful art, so sensitive and yet strong, I always look forward to her posts, and now I finally got one of her great pieces – the bag in the picture below.

I LOVE it – it is so cool and it will for sure become a steady part of my spring and summer wardrobe! In weekends I will wear it with jeans and a off-white t-shirt – At parties I will wear it with a nude color or black evening dress in silk – and in my consultant business I will wear it with a suit and a scarf that fits the colors. AND already now I know that this bag will be special to me – no matter of witch situation I wear it –so THANK you Marina for this and for our virtual friendship.

Check out Marinas blog here

I hope you all like it! (I plan to get more…)

Happy Friday! Camilla”
