Pierre-Auguste Renoir “Woman with a Parasol in a Garden”

Woman with a Parasol in a Garden [Femme avec parasol dans un jardin]

Oil on canvas • Impressionism • 54,5 x 65 cm • 1875 • Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza, Madrid

A springtime landscape with flowers and shrubs created with tiny dabs of colour, providing a constant interweaving of textures around the two small figures. This canvas was painted in the garden of Renoir’s new studio in Montmartre. His friend George Rivière recalled: “As soon as Renoir entered the house, he was charmed by the view of this garden, which looked like a beautiful abandoned park.”.

  1. Happy birthday, Pierre-Augusto Renoir!! Marina – your tribute to this amazing artist has added colour and brilliant to my day. I was reading this morning that Renoir accepted the instruction from his Neoclassical mentor: Jean-Auguste-Dominque Ingres, even though the academic style didn’t suit him. Renoir, with the help of Ingres, acquired the elementary skills needed to become a painter. This was my reminder that discipline is essential in everything we do. We learn from everything we do as well as from those who take time to help us.
