Ο Giovanni Gabrieli είναι ο σημαντικότερος, μαζί με τον Monteverdi, εκπρόσωπος της βενετσιάνικης πολυφωνικής σχολής του 160υ – 17ου αιώνα. Το έργο του σηματοδοτεί το πέρασμα από την αναγεννησιακή μουσική στο μπαρόκ και έχει επηρεάσει σύγχρονους αλλά και μεταγενέστερους δημιουργούς, όπως ο Heinrich Schütz (μαθητής του, και μεγαλύτερος Γερμανός συνθέτης της πρo Bach περιόδου). Η απόκοσμη, σαγηνευτική Litaniae Beatae Mariae Virginis, έργο εκδοθέν μετά το θάνατο του συνθέτη, τον παρουσιάζει στο απόγειο της δραματικής του εκφραστικότητας.

Giovanni Gabrieli is, along with Monteverdi, the most important representative of the Venetian polychoral school of the late 16th and 17th centuries. His work marks the transition from Renaissance music to the Baroque, and has influenced both his contemporaries and later composers, such as Heinrich Schütz (his pupil and the greatest German composer of the period before Bach). The otherwordly, enchanting Litaniae Beatae Mariae Virginis, a work published only after the composer’s death, presents him at the height of his dramatic expressiveness.
