Η απόδοση από το κουαρτέτο του John Coltrane του παραδοσιακού ‘Greensleeves’, σε διασκευή – ενορχήστρωση McCoy Tyner, είναι (ας μου επιτραπεί το κλισέ) …καθαρή μαγεία. Χριστουγενιάτικη και πέρα απ’ αυτήν. Το άλμπουμ, Africa / Brass, υπήρξε υποτιμημένο τον καιρό της κυκλοφορίας του (1961) για να κατακτήσει αργότερα το status που δικαιούται. Η μπάντα : John Coltrane – σοπράνο σαξόφωνο, McCoy Tyner – πιάνο, Paul Chambers – μπάσο, Elvin Jones, εμπλουτισμένη από τρομπέτα (Freddie Hubbard) euphorium (Julian Priester, Charles Greenlee), φλάουτο (Garvin Bushell) και γαλλικό κόρνο (Jim Buffington).

The rendition of the traditional ‘Greensleeves’ by the John Coltrane quartet, in an arrangement/orchestration by McCoy Tyner, is (if you’ll forgive the cliché) pure magic. Christmas-like, and beyond that. The album, Africa/Brass, was underrated at the time of its release (1961), only later achieving the status it deserves. The band : John Coltrane – soprano saxophone, McCoy Tyner – piano, Paul Chambers – bass, Elvin Jones – drums, augmented by trumpet (Freddie Hubbard) euphorium (Julian Priester, Charles Greenlee), flute (Garvin Bushell) and french horn (Jim Buffington).
