Essentially self-taught, with European rather than English influences [Berlioz, Saint-Saens, Wagner, Dvorak etc] of humble origin and … a Catholic, wasn’t exactly assets for making a career as a composer in Victorian England. But from a moment on, thanks to some of his works, in particular the Enigma Variations ballet, Elgar became famous and beloved by the British audience. This has ensured him, since the 1960s, an international status. He wrote symphonic & chamber music, concerts, song cycles, religious works, etc. Edward Elgar was born on this date, June 2, 1857 in the small village of Lower Broadheath, outside Worcester
