I always found it inspiring that he started later in life, left his life as a stockbroker or whatever it was… Mind you, some are critical of how he had relationships with younger women in Tahiti. But I think this kind of retroactive judging is itself problematic.

It’s become common in the United States for ideologues to go back and find fault with well-known people in history by using modern criteria, some of which are fanciful and haven’t even become standards in our own time. I’m pleased to hear you find retroactive judging problematic.
Very nicely put, Steve. A similar process is happening here in Canada too. Our first PM, our educators. They are being judged from a perspective of 2021, not 1867! And history is often very harsh on one side of the ideological fence and sweet fantasy/legend on the other.
