Δυσαρεστημένος εξ αρχής [1969] με την ενορχηστρωτική δουλειά του Phil Spector, παραγωγού του Let It Be, ο Paul McCartney αποφασίζει, 35 χρόνια αργότερα, να κάνει πράξη την εμμονή του, κατανοητή για ένα καλλιτέχνη όπως αυτός : να κυκλοφορήσει μια βερσιόν του άλμπουμ απαλλαγμένη από τα “περιττά” στοιχεία, το σύνολο δηλ. της αρχικής παραγωγής.
Το θέμα είναι ότι, κατά την ταπεινή μου άποψη : η δουλειά του Phil Spector για το Let It Be είναι ό,τι καλύτερο έχει κάνει ο παραγωγός στην ένδοξη καριέρα του. Το αποτέλεσμα που προκύπτει από την “απογύμνωση” των κομματιών είναι τουλάχιστον φτωχό, σε σύγκριση με το original.
Ακόμα πιο ενοχλητικό ίσως ήταν το timing : το Naked άλμπουμ κυκλοφορεί Νοέμβριο του 2003, με τον Spector να έχει συλληφθεί για το φόνο της φίλης του τον Φεβρουάριο του ίδιου έτους [θα καταδικαζόταν αργότερα σε 19 χρόνια φυλακή, όπου και πέθανε το 2021]. Η δουλειά για το απογυμνωμένο mix να είχε ξεκινήσει το 2002, αλλά ο …κβαντικός συσχετισμός παραμένει.
Εν πάση περιπτώσει, ιδού το αριστούργημα του Paul McCartney εις διπλούν, μπορεί ο καθένας να συγκρίνει την original βερσιόν με την …naked. Πρόκειται για το πιο αγαπημένο μου από όλα τα τραγούδια του. Μερίδιο όμως σ’ αυτό έχει η ενορχηστρωτική [= συνθετική] συνεισφορά του Spector.

Dissatisfied from the beginning [1969] with producer Phil Spector’s work for Let It Be, Paul MacCartney decided, 35 years later to put into practice an obsession, understandable for such an artist : the releasing of a Let It Be version free from the “superfluous” elements, i.e. the whole initial production.
The thing is, imho : Phil Spector’s production of Let It Be is the best thing the producer has done in his glorious career. The result obtained by “stripping” the pieces is poor to say the least, compared to the original.
Even more annoying perhaps was the timing: the album was released in November 2003, with Spector having been arrested for the murder of his girlfriend on February of the same year [he would be sentenced later to 19 years in prison, where he ended his life in 2021]. Work on the stripped-down mix had begun in 2002, but the …quantum correlation remains.
Anyway, here is Paul McCartney’s masterpiece in its two versions, anyone can compare the original with the …Naked one.
This is my favorite of his songs. However, Spector’s [compositional] orchestration has a share in this.
