Οι Liszt & Chopin ήταν φίλοι του. Ο πρώτος υποκλινόταν μπροστά στην πιανιστική του δεξιοτεχνία, πράγμα τελείως ασυνήθιστο, προερχόμενο από τον πιο διάσημο βιρτουόζο της εποχής.
Ο αινγματικός, Γαλλο-Εβραίος συνθέτης Charles-Valentin Alkan [1813-1888], δημιουργός ενός εντυπωσιακά μεγάλου αριθμού έργων αποκλειστικά για πιάνο [και κάποιων για εκκλησιαστικό όργανο] αρκετά γνωστός στον καιρό του παρά τα μεγάλα διαστήματα εθελούσιας απόσυρσης από το προσκήνιο, θα ξεχαστεί τελείως μετά θάνατον. Το έργο του θα μείνει στην αφάνεια, για να ανακαλυφθεί μόλις τρεις δεκαετίες πριν, μπαίνοντας στο ρεπερτόριο της δισκογραφίας και της συναυλιακής αίθουσας.
Και ευτυχώς. Γιατί πολλές απ’ τις συνθέσεις του, πέρα από την υπερβατική δεξιοτεχνία που απαιτούν, αποτελούν λαμπρά δείγματα της ρομαντικής τέχνης που την εποχή αυτή βρίσκεται στο απόγειό της.
Ο Marc-Andre Hamelin ερνηνεύει το εκπληκτικό δεύτερο μέρος, ‘Vent’, από το έργο του Charles – Valentin Alkan Souvenirs, Op. 15 “3 Morceaux dans le genre pathétique”.

Liszt & Chopin were his friends. The former bowed before his mastery of the piano, which was quite unusual, coming from the most famous virtuoso of the time.
The enigmatic, Jewish-French composer Charles-Valentin Alkan [1813-1888], creator of an impressive number of works, exclusively for piano [and some for organ] well – known in his time, despite long periods of voluntary retirement from the spotlight, would be completely forgotten after his death. His work would remain in obscurity, only to be discovered three decades ago, entering the repertoire of discography and concert hall.
And fortunately so. Because many of his compositions, apart from the transcendent virtuosity they require, are brilliant examples of romantic art, which at the time reaches its apogee.
Marc-Andre Hamelin performs the amazing second part, ‘Vent’, from Charles-Valentin Alkan’s Souvenirs, Op. 15 “3 Morceaux dans le genre pathétique”.
