from Oannes *

Ο λόγος που δεν είναι γνωστός όσο θα έπρεπε είναι, ίσως, η καταγωγή του. Αρκεί να ρίξει κανείς μια ματιά στη λίστα των μέτριων, κι όμως πολύ πιο διάσημων Βρετανών συνθετών του 20ου αι., για να πάρει μια ιδέα του τι εννοώ… Ο Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1957), γεννημένος στην Τσεχία, ξενιτεμένος στις ΗΠΑ, παρήγαγε τεράστιο όγκο έργου, συμφωνίες, κονσέρτα, μουσική δωματίου και όπερες. Βασικές επιρροές του συνθέτες όπως οι Στραβίνσκι, Προκόφιεφ, Μπάρτοκ και η λαϊκή μουσική της πατρίδας του.
Ο Martinů είναι κατά την άποψή μου ένας από τους πιο ενδιαφέροντες συνθέτες του 20ου αιώνα. Δείγμα της τέχνης του το δεύτερο μέρος, Adagio, από το Κονσέρτο για δυο πιάνα και ορχήστρα.

The reason he is not as known as he should, is perhaps his ancestry. One has to look at the list of average, but much more famous, British composers of the 20th century to get an idea what I mean… Bohuslav Martinů (1890-1957), born in Czechia, emigrated to the USA, produced a huge volume of work, symphonies, concerts, chamber music and operas. His main influences were composers such as Stravinsky, Prokofiev, Bartók and the folk music of his homeland.
Martinů is, in my view, one of the most interesting composers of the 20th century. A token of his art is the second part, Adagio, from the Concerto for two pianos and orchestra.
