Ο κορυφαίος συνθέτης της Επτανησιακής Σχολής ήταν και ο πρώτος Ελληνας μουσικός που διακρίθηκε στο εξωτερικό. Οι όπερες του Σπύρου Σαμάρα (1861-1917) γνώρισαν τεράστια επιτυχία στις ευρωπαϊκές αίθουσες, ιδίως σε Ιταλία και Γερμανία, με εκπρόσωπους του βερισμού [ρεύματος στο οποίο υπάγεται και ο ίδιος] όπως οι Πουτσίνι, Μασκάνι, να τον αναγνωρίζουν ως ομότιμό τους.
Ο λόγος για τον οποίο στην Ελλάδα το έργο του είναι ουσιαστικά ανύπαρκτο, αφορά στη θανάσιμη έχθρα του ιδρυτή της Εθνικής Μουσικής Σχολής Μανώλη Καλομοίρη εναντίον του Σαμάρα, τον οποίο θεωρούσε …προδότη του εθνικού καλλιτεχνικού ιδεώδους – ανάλογη μεταχείριση και για τον ίδιο λόγο επιφύλαξε η εν λόγω ερεβώδης φυσιογνωμία και στον Νίκο Σκαλκώττα.
Ακούμε την άρια “Partir” – φινάλε της Πρώτης Πράξης από την όπερα του Σαμάρα ‘Η Ξανθούλα’ – ‘La Biondinetta’. Τραγουδά ο τενόρος Σταμάτης Μπερής.
Τη Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα του Pasardjik και την Χορωδία της Ραδιοφωνίας της Σόφιας διευθύνει ο Βύρων Φιδετζής.
Μαζί ένα από τα πιανιστικά έργα του : ‘Σερενάτα’, από την Ναταλία Μιρόσνικοβα.

The leading composer of the Ionian School was also the first Greek musician to distinguish himself abroad. The operas of Spyros Samaras (1861-1917) were hugely successful in European theaters, especially in Italy and Germany, acclaimed by other verists like Puccini and Mascagni.
The reason why his work is practically non-existent in Greece was the sheer animosity of the founder of the National Music School, Manolis Kalomiris, towards Samaras, whom he considered a …traitor to the national artistic ideal – similar treatment, for the same reason, was reserved for Nikos Skalkottas by this dark personality.
We hear the aria “Partir” – finale of Act I from Samaras’ opera ‘La Biondinetta’. performed by the tenor Stamatis Beris. The Pasardjik Symphony Orchestra and the Sofia Radio Choir are conducted by Byron Fidetzis.
With this, one of his piano works : ‘Serenata’, performed by Natalia Mirosnikova.
