In 1705, in order to hear “something like this,” a 20-year-old JS Bach covered 280 miles on foot. This was the distance between Arnstadt, where he worked, and Lübeck, in whose cathedral Dietrich Buxtehude, his youth idol, was organist.
The Danish-German composer was one of the most important of his time, one of the greats of German baroque, and a huge influence on Johann Sebastian.
