“Ο Charles Ives καταβρόχθισε το γλυκό της σύγχρονης μουσικής πριν όλοι εμείς οι υπόλοιποι καθίσουμε καν στο τραπέζι” – Igor Stravinsky.
Όχι άσχημα για κάποιον που η βιοποριστική εργασία του ήταν άσχετη με τη μουσική : ήταν ασφαλιστής. Οι εντυπωσιακά μπροστά από την εποχή τους πειραματισμοί του Αμερικανού συνθέτη με την πολυτονικότητα, την ατονικότητα, την πολυρρυθμία, τα clusters κ.ά. τον καθιστούν μια απο τις εμβληματικές φιγούρες της μουσικής του 20ου αι., με επιρροή σε συνθέτες από τον Copeland και τον Bernstein μέχρι τον Elliot Carter, τον Cage κα τον Philip Glass και τον
Διαλέγω το τελευταίο μέρος, ‘Communion’ από τη θαυμαστή Τρίτη Συμφωνία του – γράφτηκε μεταξύ 1908 και 1910. Την Academy of Saint-Martin-In-The-Fields διευθύνει ο Neville Marriner.

“Charles Ives devoured the sweet of modern music before the rest of us even sat down at the table” – Igor Stravinsky. Not bad for someone whose livelihood was unrelated to music: he was an insurance agent.
The American composer’s experiments with polytonality, atonality, polyrhythmia, clusters etc. impressively ahead of his time, make him one of the emblematic figures of 20th century music, and an influence to composers from Copeland and Bernstein to Elliot Carter, Cage and Philip Glass.
I choose the last part, ‘Communion’ from his admirable Third Symphony – composed between 1908 and 1910. The Academy of Saint-Martin-In-The-Fields is conducted by Neville Marriner.
