Σαν σήμερα, 27 Μαρτίου 1909 γεννήθηκε ο Ben Webster. Μαζί με τους Coleman Hawkins και Lester Young θεωρείται ο σημαντικότερος τενόρος σαξοφωνίστας της προ μπίμποπ εποχής. Επηρεασμένος ο ίδιος από τον Johnny Hodges, τον [άλτο] σαξoφωνίστα του Duke Ellington, θα αποτελέσει πηγή έμπνευσης για πλήθος μεταγενέστερούς του.

On this date, March 27, 1909, Ben Webster was born. Along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young he is considered the most important tenor saxophonist of the pre-bebop era. Influenced by Johnny Hodges, Duke Ellington’s [alto] saxophonist, he will be an inspiration for countless subsequent players. We hear the eponymous track from Ben Webster Quintet’s album, Soulville [1958]. Oscar Peterson – piano, Herb Ellis – guitar, Ray Brown – bass, Stan Levey – drums
