Very happy to share Oannes tribute to Benny Goodman!

Στις 30 Μαΐου 1910 γεννήθηκε στο Σικάγο ο κλαρινετίστας, συνθέτης & bandleader Benny Goodman, ο άνθρωπος που με τα εκρηκτικά live shοw του [και με την δύναμη του ραδιοφώνου], πυροδότησε στα ’30s τον πυρετό της swing era. Ο Benny Goodman συνέβαλε όσο ελάχιστοι στην άνοδο του status της jazz από εκείνο της “μουσικής για διασκέδαση” σ’ αυτό της “μουσικής για σοβαρά ακροατήρια” [η περίφημη συναυλία του στο Carnegie Hall, 1938 και θεωρειται μια από τις καθοριστικές στιγμές στην ιστορία της jazz]. Στη δεκαετία του ’40 προσχώρησε για λίγο στο ρεύμα του bebop με μικρότερα σχήματα, ενώ στη συνέχεια επεκτάθηκε σαν σολίστας και στο κλασικό ρεπερτόριο [Clarinet Concerto του Mozart, πρώτες εκτελέσεις έργων των Bartok, Arnold, Poulenc, Copland]
Πέρα από το “αμιγώς καλλιτεχνικό” σκέλος, ο Benny Goodman αξίζει επιπλέον σεβασμό για το ότι η μπάντα του ήταν από τις πρώτες περιπτώσεις συνύπαρξης λευκών και μαύρων μουσικών, σε εποχές όχι ευνοϊκές για κάτι τέτοιο.

On May 30, 1910, the clarinetist, composer & bandleader Benny Goodman was born in Chicago. With his explosive live show [and the power of radio], he would spark the fever of the swing era in the ’30s. Thanks to Benny Goodman, the status of jazz was risen from “music for entertainment” to “music for serious audiences” [his glorious concert at Carnegie Hall, 1938, is considered as one of the defining moments in jazz history].
In the 1940s he briefly joined the stream of bebop playing with smaller groups, and then expanded as a soloist to the classic repertoire [Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, premieres of works by Bartok, Arnold, Poulenc, Copland]
In addition to his artistic value, Benny Goodman deserves respect also for the fact that his band was one of the first consisted of white and black musicians, in times unfavorable for such a thing.
