Max Bruch
was born
in Cologne, Prussia
Bruch wrote more than 200 works, including three violin concertos. His first Violin Concerto in G minor, Op. 26 is one of the most popular Romantic violin concertos.
His conservatively structured works, in the German romantic musical tradition, placed him in the camp of Romantic classicism exemplified by Johannes Brahms, rather than the opposing “New Music” of Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner. In his time, he was known primarily as a choral composer.

As a teenager I discovered Bruch’s “Scottish Fantasy” and “Violin Concerto,” both of which I still love. I think of Bruch more in the tradition of Mendelssohn than Brahms, though both make sense to me.
His 1st violin concerto was my first as a kid. It was many years later that I listened to more. I get what you’re saying. 🙏
