Piano Concerto No 1 In G minor by Felix Mendelssohn [21-year-old at the time of its composition] has become an informal venue for speed racing among the most famous soloists – often at the expense of the listen’s clarity.
Among dozens of performances, I pick the one by the wonderful – not yet known as much as he deserves – German pianist Martin Helmchen. Not exactly …slow, but perfectly balanced between “dizzy feeling” and crystal clarity with which notes are unfolded.
