The amazing clarinetist Buddy De Franco was one of the rare artists’ cases, and the sole soloist of the instrument, who swam equally comfortably in the waters of swing and the new [in the late ‘40s’] stream of bebop, also participating a little bit later, in the first stages of third stream jazz [a mix of classical and jazz].
A look at collaborations gives an insight into his skills and diversity : from Charlie Barnet and Gene Krupa to Tommy Dorsey, Count Basie [member of Septet] and Art Tatum, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Stan Getz, Lenny Tristano…
We hear a track from the swing side of BDF, and a track from the bebop album, Mr. Clarinet, recorded in 1953 with the Buddy De Franco Quartet [Kenny Drew – piano, Milt Hinton – bass, Art Blakey – Drums]
