Genesis : That’s Me (1968) [reblog]

Οι ίδιοι οι Genesis δεν φαίνεται να πίστευαν ιδιαίτερα σ’ αυτό : Το ‘That’s Me’ ήταν το flip side του πρώτου τους single, ‘The Silent Sun’, και έμεινε εκτός πρώτου τους άλμπουμ – θα περιλαμβανόταν στην επανέκδοσή του μερικά χρόνια αργότερα.
Κάτι περίεργο συμβαίνει εδώ : το ‘That’s Me’ είναι ένα από τα πιο αγαπημένα μου τραγούδια των Genesis ever – για τη φρεσκάδα και τη “ντροπαλότητά του”.

Genesis themselves didn’t seem to have much faith in this : ‘That’s Me’ was the flip side of their first single, ‘The Silent Sun’, and was left out of their first album – it would be included on its reissue some years later. Whichever Genesis-related site I’ve looked at, it’s treated like a timid teenage attempt, not at all separate from the trend of the time, not at all representative of what was to come.
Something strange is happening here : ‘That’s Me’ is one of my favorite Genesis songs ever – for its freshness and “timidity”. But also the notes, the lyrics, and the incredibly mature voice of 18-year-old Peter Gabriel.
So I choose this to honor him as one of my dearest FMBC members.

❝ Every morning when the people are out
And I’m free move around on my own
I look into the sun and I see a reflection
Of a sad and lonely shrivelled man
That’s me, that’s me
And I know it’s how I’m always gonna be
Nothing to do, nothing to say
Nothing to hope, and nothing to pray
I can see, I can feel
I’ve forgotten what I’m meant to be
Won’t come back, not if I try
They told me things about me that I didn’t know
But I could tell they’ve told me lies
And it really goes to show
That everyone was wrong
And they don’t understand my ways
But it’s not me that’s going wrong, it’s them
I can see, I can feel
I’ve forgotten what I’m meant to be
Won’t come back, not if I try
They told me things about me that I didn’t know
But I could tell they’ve told me lies
And it really goes to show
That everyone was wrong
And they don’t understand my ways
But it’s not me that’s going wrong, it’s them
Every morning when the people are out
And I’m free move around my own
I look into the sun and I see a reflection
Of a sad and lonely shrivelled man
That’s me, that’s me
And I know it’s how I’m always gonna be
That’s me, that’s me
And I know it’s how I’m always gonna be
Shrivelled old man
Who hides from a world
He’s never seen the light
That can set him free
His vicious life
Is such a shame
I wanna find out who’s to blame
And that’s me, oh that’s me, aaoh
Set me free ❞

Enjoy!
