Μια από τις πιο σημαντικές προσφορές του Mendelssohn αφορά στην επάνοδο της μουσικής του J.S. Bach στο συναυλιακό ρεπερτόριο. Ο συνθέτης οργάνωσε την πρώτη παρουσίαση [Sing-Akademie, Βερολίνο, 11/3/1829] του ‘Κατά Ματθαίον’ από την εποχή του θανάτου του δασκάλου. Εκτός αυτού, ευρισκόμενος στην Αγγλία φρόντισε για μια πιο άρτια έκδοση κάποιων από τα ορατόρια του Handel, συνθέτη που επίσης θαύμαζε.
Η επιρροή των μεγάλων του μπαρόκ είναι σαφής στα θρησκευτικά ορατότια του ίδιου του Mendelssohn, ‘Paulus’ [εδώ αποσπάσματα απ’ αυτό στο blog] και Elijah.
Ακούμε ένα απόσπασμα από το τελευταίο, ερμηνευμένο από την κορυφαία σοπράνο Renée Fleming, γεννημένη επίσης αυτό το μήνα : “Hear ye, Israel” – “Thus saith the Lord” – “I am He that comforteth”

One of Mendelssohn’s most important offers has to do with the restoration of J.S. Bach’s music to the concert repertoire. The composer organized the first performance [Sing-Akademie, Berlin, 11/3/1829] of St. Matthew’s Passion since the master’s death. Besides, while in England he arranged for a more complete version of some of the oratorios by Handel, a composer he also admired.
The baroque greats’ influence is clear in Mendelssohn’s own religious oratorios ‘Paulus’ [excerpts from it on this blog, here] and Elijah.
We hear an excerpt from the latter, performed by leading soprano Renée Fleming, also born this month : “Hear ye, Israel” – “Thus saith the Lord” – “I am He that comforteth”
