from Oannes *

Η πλέον ενδιαφέρουσα ίσως, μαζί με τον Σκαλκώττα, περίπτωση Έλληνα συνθέτη του 20 αι. είναι ο Γιάννης Χρήστου (1926-1970). Tο έργο του, “ενήμερο” της πρωτοπορίας της εποχής, αλλά και των σύγχρονών της φιλοσοφικών και μεταφυσικών ρευμάτων (οι σπουδές του συνθέτη, πέραν της μουσικής, συμπεριλάμβαναν θητεία δίπλα σε προσωπικότητες όπως οι Βιτγκενστάιν, Ράσελ και Γιουνγκ) αποτελεί εν πολλοίς τοπίο “εξωγήινο”, ακολουθώντας τη συνολική και για λόγους πολυποίκιλλους, πορεία της avant-garde προς τη λήθη. Όπως μπορεί κανείς να ακούσει στο πρώτο, εντυπωσιακής ωριμότητας έργο του Μουσική Του Φοίνικα (συνθ. 1949) πρόκειται για συνθέτη που χρήζει επείγουσας ανακάλυψης.

Perhaps the most interesting among the 20th century Greek composers, along with Skalkottas, is the case of Jani Christou (1926-1970). His work, “informed” by the avant-garde of the time, but also by its contemporary philosophical and metaphysical currents (the composer’s studies, apart from music, included tenure next to personalities such as Wittgenstein, Russell and Jung) is largely an “alien” landscape, following the overall and for many reasons, avant-garde’s march to oblivion. As one can hear in Phoenix Music, his first, impressively mature work (composed in 1949) this is a composer who needs to be discovered.
