Among the many, relatively unknown, versions of Mussorgsky’s work (a composition written initially for piano, listen here, along with other works) the one by leading American conductor Leopold Stokowski stands out – his name historically associated with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Disney’s Fantasia. The differentiation of his approach from Ravel’s famous one is remarkable, as we hear from the work’s first parts.
