Επί τη ευκαιρία της επίσκεψης του Branford Marsalis σήμερα στο Ίδρυμα Σταύρος Νιάρχος (δεν έχω πατήσει ούτε μια φορά το πόδι μου εκεί, ούτε σκοπεύω να το κάνω) ακούμε δυο κομμάτια από το Romances For Saxophone που κυκλοφόρησε το 1986. Η κλασική παιδεία του σημαντικού σαξοφωνίστα της jazz δεν έχει το εύρος εκείνης του αδελφού Wynton. O χώρος όμως κάθε άλλο παρά άγνωστος του είναι, όπως μαρτυρεί το κόνσεπτ του άλμπουμ : μια σειρά κλασικών συνθέσεων διασκευασμένων για σοπράνο σαξόφωνο και ορχήστρα, απ’ τις οποίες διαλέγουμε τα L’ Isle Joyeuse του Claude Debussy και Bachianas Brazileiras # 5 του Heitor Villa Lobos.

On the occasion of Branford Marsalis’ visit to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation today (a place I’ve never set foot in, nor plan to), we’re listening to two pieces from Romances for Saxophone, released in 1986. The classical training of this significant jazz saxophonist does not have the breadth of that of his brother Wynton. But the classical realm is far from unfamiliar to him, as evidenced by the concept of the album: a series of classical compositions arranged for soprano saxophone and orchestra, from which we pick Claude Debussy’s L’ Isle Joyeuse & Heitor Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brazileiras #5.
