the text:
In one of the first conquering missions in history,
the Persian military was destroyed when attacking the Greeks.
Since then, humanity has mourned many such defeats…
The tragedy continues…
This illustration was part of a broader project that included a video
created on a very primitive macro mind director [mac]
and using up most of Middlesex Poly’s [now University] computer memory to run it!
Inspired by Aeschylus’s “The Persians”.
How unfortunate to see history repeating itself again and again…
*1990 was the year when the Gulf War begun.

I have to admit this artwork is cool!
Deep and meaningful dear Marina.. Rivers of blood have been spilled, as the many ghosts of the past haunt our future and ask WHY?
this touched me greatly . xx ❤
Till now, I haven’t heard an answer to that question. Why. really.
Thank you so much, Sue. It means so much to me.
hugs xxxx 🙂
You know Marina.. as I view life and all the wars.. Its not the ordinary people who create them or want them… But they have over the centuries been made to take part in them.. Forced by Control to feel patriotic and Fearful then when they did not comply, they were to die anyway..
So sad what The ‘Few’ do to so many.. As the many then begin to think it is the normal thing to do…
Yet were man in his numbers refused to take up arms against his brothers and sisters.. Those who rule would have no power to rule..
I hope mankind one day can see the power he holds in Peaceful actions that refuse to take vengeance at another Mans Whim.. And yes… for what?… Can any one say we are better off for War?… Apart from those who gain the most through armaments and weaponry profits.. War is about Profit and keeping certain nations in their loop of Power as they exert Fear to control the masses..
Sad… Very Sad….
I hope someday soon… We wake up to ourselves..
Blessings Sue xx
Throughout our history, it’s always been like that, but maybe as you say, we may wake up to ourselves.
Hope we do…
Thank you for those insightful thoughts, my dear Sue.
Happy Full Moon!! 🙂 xxxx
It was… a very Happy full Moon. x
Hi Marina, This painting had a very profound effect on me, I can not tell you how much emotion it invoked in me. it is timeless and incredibly powerful. Sometimes you read or see something and it stays there in your mind for couple of days, this one has been with me for months. It touched me on a very personal level and, I don’t know how someone could look at it and not feel obligated to take part in change.
Thanks ! J.A.M.
I can’t begin to tell you how much this means to me. As you may have read this was inspired by a performance I saw in Epidaurus of Aeschylus’s “The Persians”. It had such a strong impact on me and I kept thinking of war and all conquering wars in the history of humanity and their outcome: Death. Winner or loser, both the same, walking towards their deaths. Hence this painting. It makes me really happy to hear that it has managed to plant seeds of peace! Thank you, very much from my heart. 🙂
Powerful Stuff! I simply love the colours.they capture the emotion, wonderfully 🙂
Thank you very much, Adam. It was a very powerful subject… I’m really happy you liked it. 🙂
This is a very powerful and gripping piece. Awesome and bold work.
Thank you so much, Shelley. Your words are truly rewarding, as this was a ‘difficult’ piece in many ways.
🙂
This is very moving, Marina, emotionally and literally – in motion – bold and strong. I love it on your products!
Hard one too and wasn’t sure about the products either until I started “messing” with it!
Thank you, Patricia. Means so much from you!
🙂 xxxxxxxxx
This is as powerful and dramatic as the theme is. You’ve captured it and stirred deep thought.
Very nice, Marina.
A difficult theme for sure… making your comment even more rewarding, Issy, thank you!
🙂
Very powerful portrayal of movement and conflict Marina. And the devastation in the center. Amazing work! Love it 🙂
Thank you, Madhu. A strong theme like war can be quite challenging, so I can’t tell you how happy I am to read your comment!
🙂
Very powerful! Strong painting, love it!
Oh, I’m very glad you like it, Ioanna. Powerful theme!
🙂 Have a great week!!
So good to see this masterpiece again – fantastic, Marina! Unfortunately, this subject always seems to be relevant…
Ah, Suzan… you know how much your words mean to me… Well, hopefully one day we’ll look at this and wonder “what’s this painter on about?”! A little wishful thinking can’t hurt, can it?! 🙂
Happy new week and Monday! xxxxxx
WAR for sure is a difficult topic for a painter, but I’m very impressed, HOW you managed to visualize the subject! Great! This could be a large sized painting in the UN building in NYC – I hope they will buy it 10×3 meters for 300.000 $$!
Oh, thank you my dear Frizz! Yes, the UN building! What an idea! Maybe one day when they truly become UNITED Nations! 🙂
Beautiful
Thank you, Bill!
🙂
Oh now this is my favourite kind of work that you do Marina. So moving, so beautiful and so challenging. I love, love, love this – I really do! If I could, I would buy the canvas print right now. When I return to the UK that might just happen. 🙂
Ah, Ken, thank you so much, my friend! It means so much to me that you appreciate this work. Happy – relaxing Sunday!
🙂
beautiful on all levels. tony
Tony, thank you so much!
🙂

Moving.
Unforgettable.
Hook,
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
🙂
That is a really moving piece, Marina.
Thank you, Donna!
🙂
great depiction! but war….a very difficult conundrum to ponder upon….if faced with an aggressor, and if all other means have failed to defuse the situation….it would be only right to defend oneself against the aggressor? whatever, both sides will be faced with loss of life….and loss of life is the biggest loss anybody can face in this world of ours…
Ah, indeed a very difficult conundrum!!! As you say, both sides are faced with losses, no matter who wins.
🙂
Great piece, thank you for your visits and your thoughts, I look forward to seeing and reading more posts from your lovely blog also. Best regards from Dublin. – Arran.
My pleasure, Arran!
Thank you too for your kind comment!
All the best, from Athens.
🙂
the paintings speak volumns…war torn is hard to express though I once tried http://67paintings.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/torn.png
I appologize for this very late response (have no idea how I missed your comment)!
Thank you so much and your “torn” painting is brilliant! War brings such strong emotions and images, that when one tries to express it, it doesn’t seem strong enough!
🙂
Thanks for coming back to me…I’m sure there is a lot of common ground across our traditions, histories and the human needs to emerge with songs of love and resistance. Keep up the great work!!
Very true!
You too* and have a great Sunday!
🙂
* I do follow your beautiful work and -if that means anything- if there were a “like” button in your posts, you’d see me appear in a regular basis! Brilliant work!
excellent interpretation – shows the inevitable from such a scenario. Each side straining to overcome the other.
Thank you so much for your visit and insightful words, Laura!
C’est puissant, Marina! Mas belle! 😊
Merci merci, belle!
😀
😊
I hope this work, in its small “butterfly effect” way, will help to stop future wars.
Oh, if only my dear, if only…
This is strong and… beautifully awful, like war is awful. When humans shows their ugly faces, blood will flow. And the blood will fuel the fire like gasoline.
So right, Anette! Thank you so much for your kind comment and thoughts.
Some of the forms are just beautiful.
Thank you, Stephen.
Very emotional! Nice work Marina!
Thank you, Jennifer!
I really like this Marina. It shows the human mind/soul that seems to constantly want war and the inevitable bloodshed that comes to all who walk that path. Really powerful.
Thank you Katie!
Still as powerful an image as when you first painted it!
Ah, Suzan, you have no idea how good this sounds, especially coming from you!
xxxxxxx 🙂
Brilliant, in terms of conception AND realization!!!
Now, that’s a great compliment! Thank you KJ!
