The official tribute to Borodin by Oannes

Αποτιμώντας τα μέλη της ομάδας των “πέντε”, των συνθετών της “ρώσικης σχολής” [Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov] ο Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky σημείωνε για τον Borodin: “πρόκειται για έναν πενηντάχρονο καθηγητή χημείας στην ιατρική σχολή. Διαθέτει ταλέντο, ίσως μεγάλο ταλέντο, όμως αυτό έχει καταστραφεί από την έλλειψη γνώσεων”.
Ο μέγας Tchaikovsky, όπως και άλλοι του διαμετρήματός του, είχε κάποιες δυσκολίες στην αξιολόγηση “συναδέλφων”: είναι ο ίδιος που έχει χαρακτηρίσει τον Brahms …”ατάλαντο μπάσταρδο”.
Εδώ ωστόσο είχε κάποιο δίκιο: ένας άνθρωπος με το ταλέντο του Alexander Borodin [1833-1887, γεννήθηκε σαν σήμερα], διόλου …κατεστραμμένο, και τεράστιο, όπως προβάλλει απ’ τα ευάριθμα δυστυχώς έργα του [μια όπερα, τον Prince Igor που εξασφάλισε τη θέση του στην ιστορία, κάποια κουαρτέτα και τρίο, άφθονα τραγούδια, δυο συμφωνίες και μια ακόμα, ημιτελή] θα μπορούσε να το έχει “αξιοποιήσει” πολύ περισσότερο.
Αφήνουμε όπερα και συμφωνίες για κάποια άλλη στιγμή και ακούμε μουσική δωματίου, το δεύτερο μέρος από το Πιάνο Τρίο του σε Ρε μείζονα. Romanze: Andante

Valuing the members of the “five”, the composers of “Russian School” [Balakirev, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakov] Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote about Borodin: “he is a 50-year-old chemistry professor in Medical Academy. He has talent, perhaps great talent, but this has been destroyed by his lack of knowledge”
The great Tchaikovsky, like others of his stature, had some difficulties in evaluating “colleagues”: he is the same one who has characterized Brahms … “a talentless bastard”.
Here however he had some point: a man with the talent of Alexander Borodin [1833-1887, born on this date], not at all … damaged, and huge, as this shines through his works [an opera, Prince Igor, who secured his place in history, some quartets and trios, plenty of songs, two symphonies and another one, unfinished] could have “exploited” it much more.
We leave the opera and the symphonies for some other time, choosing instead the second part from his Piano Trio in D major. Romanze: Andante
