On this date, December 4, 1955, the outstanding singer, musician and songwriter Cassandra Wilson was born. From the early ’90s she became famous with a series of albums highlighting her approach, personal and invigorating, to idioms such as blues, pop, jazz and country.
Even more interesting, however, are the first albums she released as a member of the M-Base “community” [a circle of musicians gathered around the composer – tenor saxophonist Steve Coleman, one of the most creative figures in the history of jazz and one of my all-time “heroes”).
We hear a CW composition from her first album.

CASSANDRA WILSON : LOVER COME BACK TO ME [LOVERLY, 2008]

Από ένα άλμπουμ εξ ολοκλήρου σχεδόν με jazz standards, ακούμε την εορτάζουσα στο “Lover Come Back To Me” – ξεχωρίζουν το πιάνο του κορυφαίου Jason Moran, η κιθάρα του Martin Sewell και η τρομπετα του Nicholas Payton.

From an album almost exclusively of Jazz standards we hear the birthday girl on “Lover Come Back To Me” – featuring here, the exquisite Jason Moran on piano, Martin Sewell on guitar and Nicholas Payton on trumpet.

❝ You went away
I let you
We broke the ties that bind
I wanted to forget you
And leave the past behind
Still, the magic of the night I met you
Seems to stay forever in my mind The sky was blue
And high above
The moon was new
And so was love
This eager heart of mine was singing
Lover where can you be You came at last
Love had its day
That day is past
You’ve gone away
This aching heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing you used to do
I’m so lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I’m waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me
When I remember every little thing you used to do
I grow lonely
Every road I walk along
I walk along with you
No wonder I am lonely The sky is blue
The night is cold
The moon is new
But love is old
And while I’m waiting here
This heart of mine is singing
Lover come back to me

CASSANDRA WILSON : I CAN’T STAND THE RAIN [BLUE LIGHT TILL DAWN, 1993]

Μια λίαν προσωπική, bluesy εκδοχή του κλασικού της Ann Peebles, από το άλμπουμ της CW, Blue Light Till Dawn του 1993.

A very personal bluesy version of Ann Peebles‘ classic song, from Blue Light Till Dawn, an album CW released in 1993.

❝ I can’t stand the rain ‘gainst my window
Bringing back sweet memories
Ican’t stand the rain ‘gainst my window
‘Cause he’s not here with me
Hey window pain do you remember
How sweet it used to be
When we were together
Everything was so grand, yes it was
Now that we’ve parted
There’s one sound that I just can’t stand…
Alone with the pillow
Where his head used to lay, yeah
I know you’ve got some sweet memories
But like a window you ain’t got nothin’ to say
I can’t stand the rain ‘gainst my window
Bringing back sweet memories, hey
I can’t stand the rain, ooh
‘Gainst my window, oh no no
‘Cause he’s not here with me, uh
Alone with the pillow uh uh
Where his head used to lay, yeah
I know you’ve got some sweet memories
But like a window you ain’t got nothin’ to say, hey hey
Uh, uh, I can’t stand the rain…
(I can’t I can’t I can’t can’t stand the rain)…
Baby, uh, uh, uh, hey hey
Ooh, ooh, uh, uh, hey
Don’t you know, ‘t you think…
No no ooh oooohh hey hey hey hey hey, no
Dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum dum
Oohh!… Get off my window…
(I can’t I can’t I can’t can’t stand the rain)…
Get off my window now, get off my window
Get off my window nah, I can’t stand the rain
I can’t stand the rain, ooh, can’t stand the rain, oh❞

Enjoy!

* For my friends who didn’t know, or first timers here, Oannes [aka Socratis Papahatzis] is my husband, partner in life and music and the one with my undying admiration. Together we have a band MK-O [the music of Marina Kanavaki & Oannes]. So, it’s my pleasure to share with you his [and sometimes mine] musical selections. Do visit his site. He has my highest recommendation!
