The Twittering Machine [Die Zwitscher Maschine]
Oil transfer drawing, watercolor, and ink on paper with gouache and ink borders on board • Expressionism • 64,1 x 48,3cm • 1922 • MoMA
Group of birds shackled to a wire attached to a hand crank. In this drawing, humans turn movement and song against nature, making them activities of enslavement.
Beautiful
I couldn’t agree more!
I’d also found the MoMA article and then another one with even more information:

Yes, I know, I’d seen it too! Thanks for adding the link!
Sorry for the late response, Marina. We were in Ottawa this past week and just returned home last night. We experienced a snowstorm in Ottawa and have come back to a huge snowstorm in Vancouver. We just landed before they closed the airport because of the snow fall. I love Paul Klee! He had a way with words and brushes. I read that he said: “A drawing is simply a line going for a walk.”
Thank you for a wonderful 2022. Looking forward to the conversations waiting for us in 2023.
Oh, my!!!!! Snow follows you!!!! At least you got home before they closed the airport! Please don’t apologize! Stay warm and safe.
He really had a way with brushes and words and I love the quote you picked. It’s so characteristic of his painting ‘innocence’!
…and thank YOU, my dearest friend.
Likewise!
Many hugs your way …and sun rays! 😉
Thanks for the reminder, Dahling!
Will head over to have another look at his work!

Ah, I know you’ll enjoy his work! 😘😘😘😘😘😘😘😘
… and done long before Twitter was a thought! Not the vibrant colors I’ve seen from Klee. Yamas!
Way back!
At MoMA, they give an interesting description about the color:
“…By contrast, the painted blue backdrop opens into boundless space. As an acid-pink stain of watercolor encircles the scene, the world appears to close in on the birds, reverberating with the cacophonous chaos of their songs.” [https://www.moma.org/collection/works/37347]
Yamas!
Almost prophetic! I went back to your extensive exhibit for Klee and was thrilled once again. Brilliant, and his palette for the cubist and impressionist pieces is exquisite.
Yes, perhaps prescient in some way. But then, aren’t most of the better artists like that?
Oh, yes they are!
Isn’t it though?! I agree with you and yes, his palette really is exquisite!
Those are wonderful little birds. Way ahead of his time illustrating Twitter.
My thoughts exactly!!!! 😉
I love those little birds!
reminiscent of one of you father’s contraptions?
