From today and throughout February we will be listening to music by composers born this month. Starting with Luigi Boccherini [1743 – 1805].
The main contribution of remarkable Italian composer – cellist is found in the music he wrote for his favorite instrument.
In pieces like this one, Grave Assai-Fandango from his fourth Guitar Quintet, I hear hints of what, nowadays [from the ’70s onwards] has dominated as a ambient music : minimization of musical material, repetitiveness, emphasis on timbre.

* For my friends who didn’t know, or first timers here, Oannes [aka Socratis Papahatzis] is my husband, partner in life and music and the one with my undying admiration. Together we have a band MK-O [the music of Marina Kanavaki & Oannes]. So, it’s my pleasure to share with you his [and sometimes mine] musical selections. • Do visit his site. He has my highest recommendation!

I still love that piece, no matter how many times I’ve heard it.
