from Oannes *

Όχι γνωστός όσο θα μπορούσε σ’ ένα ευρύτερο κοινό, ο Αυστριακός Joseph Haydn δεν πάει να είναι ένας από τους κορυφαίους συνθέτες όλων των εποχών — κάτοχος τίτλων όπως “ο πατέρας της Συμφωνίας”, “ο πατέρας του κουαρτέτου εγχόρδων” και “ο πατέρας της σονάτας”.
Ο αμοιβαίος θαυμασμός που τον συνέδεε με τον Mozart έχει καταγραφεί στην ιστορία όπως και η φιλία τους : ο νεαρός συνθέτης δεν έπαυε να αναφέρεται σ’ εκείνα που όφειλε στην τέχνη του Haydn, μ’ εκείνον να ανταποδίδει δηλώνοντας “ενώπιον Θεoύ” ότι ο Mozart ήταν ο μεγαλύτερος συνθέτης που είχε γνωρίσει, διά ζώσης ή και κατ’ όνομα.
Η εντυπωσιακή απουσία “εγώ”, μιλώντας πάντα για μουσικό τέτοιου επιπέδου, ιδιαίτερα επιτυχημένου μάλιστα, αντίθετα μ’ εκείνον που εγκωμίαζε ως ανώτερό του, δείχνει το ποιον του ανδρός και, ίσως, κάτι από τα morals της περιόδου.
Ξεκινάμε το μικρό αφιέρωμά μας σ’ αυτόν με το Poco Adagio, δεύτερο μέρος του κουαρτέτου εγχόρδων Op. 76 No 3 σε Ντο μείζονα [“Emperor”] : ακούγοντάς το “ξεχνάς” ότι το θέμα του αποτέλεσε μετέπειτα τον εθνικό ύμνο της Γερμανίας : απλώς αφήνεσαι στη λεπτοφυία της επεξεργασίας και των παραλλαγών.

Not as well known as he could be to a wider audience, Austrian Joseph Haydn is nonetheless one of the greatest composers of all time — holder of titles such as “father of symphony”, “father of string quartet and “father of sonata”. The mutual admiration between him and Mozart has been recorded, as well as their friendship : the young composer never ceased to refer to what he owed to Haydn’s art, with him reciprocating by stating “before God” that Mozart was the greatest composer he had ever known, in person or in name.
The striking absence of “ego”, speaking of a musician of this level, extremely successful unlike the one he praised as his superior, shows something about the man himself and, perhaps, something about the morals of the period.
We begin our little tribute with the second part of string quartet Op. 76 No 3 in C Major “Emperor” : the fact that this theme became later the national anthem of Germany is something you forget, giving yourself to the beauty of numerous details and variations.
