from Oannes *

Η σημαντικότερη ίσως φυσιογνωμία ανάμεσα στους συνθέτες που γεννήθηκαν Μάιο, και ένας από τους μεγαλύτερους όλων των εποχών, είναι ο Johannes Brahms.
Προσωπική μου προτίμηση ανάμεσα στα έργα του, χωρίς ανταγωνισμό, είναι η Τραγική Ουβερτούρα έργο 81.
Αν η πρώτη λέξη του τίτλου περιγράφει την ποιότητα των συναισθημάτων, η δεύτερη [“Εισαγωγή”] αποτυγχάνει να αποδώσει το εύρος αυτής της σύνθεσης : μπορεί ο Brahms να υπήρξε ο βράχος της “συντηρητικής” προσέγγισης, της λεγόμενης δηλ. “καθαρής μουσικής”, κόντρα στις …φιλολογικές ανησυχίες των πρωτοπόρων της εποχής του, σε έργα όμως σαν αυτό, μέσα από την κλασική αυστηρότητα της φόρμας, αναδεικνύεται σε κορυφαίο “story teller”.
Η Τραγική Εισαγωγή είναι ιστορία ζωής. Ως εκ τούτου, επίσης τέλεια επιλογή για funeral song.

Johannes Brahms is perhaps the most important figure among May born composers, and one of the greatest of all time.
Tragic Overture op. 81 is my favorite among his works, without competition.
If the first word of the title describes the quality of emotions, the second fails to convey the breadth of this composition : Brahms may have been the epitome of “conservative” approach, the so-called “pure music” vs the …literary interests of pioneers of his era, but in works like this, through the classical rigor of form, he emerges as a top “story teller”.
Tragic Overture is a life story. Therefore, also a perfect choice for funeral song.
