Ανάμεσα στους γυιούς του Bach ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον μου κινεί ο Wilhelm Friedemann, απ’ τους [αδίκως, όχι τόσο] επιφανείς αυτού του μήνα. Μια μουσική ιδιοφυία επισκιασμένη από εκείνην του πατέρα, από το έργο του οποίου κράτησε περισσότερα πολυφωνικά στοιχεία απ’ όσα οι διάσημοι “νεωτεριστές” αδελφοί του. Αναπτύσσοντας όμως ταυτόχρονα μια γλώσσα πιο προσωπική από εκείνους.
Με εξαιρετική φήμη αυτοσχεδιαστή, ολιγογράφος σχετικά, θα αναγνωριζόταν ως συνθέτης ένα αιώνα μετά το θάνατό του. Ένας από τους λόγους της “εμπορικής αποτυχίας” του [επίσης μαθηματικού και νομομαθούς] Wilhelm Friedemann ήταν ο ιδιόρρυθμος και απρόβλεπτος χαρακτήρας του.

Among Bach’s sons I have a special interest for Wilhelm Friedemann, one of the [unjustly, not so] prominent ones of this month’s born.
A musical genius overshadowed by that of the father, from whose work he retained more polyphonic elements than his famous “modernist” brothers. But at the same time developing a language more personal than theirs.
With an excellent reputation as an improviser, relatively less prolific a composer, he would be recognized a century after his death. One of the reasons for the “commercial failure” of Wilhelm Friedemann [also a mathematician and a lawman] was his eccentric and unpredictable character.
We hear the first part, Ricercata, of his Symphony in D minor, FK 66.
