We hear Alfred Brendel on the second [00:00] and third [03:09] part of the Sonata for Piano No. 26 in E Flat Major, Op. 81 A, ‘Les Adieux’. This is a 1810 composition, on the verge of LVB ’s second and third periods.
The title of the work as well as its three parts’ ones [‘Lebewohl’ – farewell, ‘Abwesenheit’ – absence and ‘Wiedersehen’ – reunion] suggest its programmatic nature, although the person to whom they refer is left unclear.
