Η ελευθεριακή φύση της μουσικής του Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) εντυπωσιακή για σοβιετικό συνθέτη, ήταν αποτέλεσμα χαλάρωσης της αυστηρότητας των πολιτιστικών ηθών χάρη στον ερχομό του N. Khroustchev στην εξουσία. Αυτό συμπεριλάμβανε μεγαλύτερη επαφή με τα δυτικά ιδιώματα και ευκαιρία για πειραματισμούς ως τότε αδιανόητους.
Ακόμα και υπό τέτοιες συνθήκες, η επική πρώτη Συμφωνία του Schnittke, 1972, προκάλεσε σκάνδαλο και …την μήνι της Ένωσης Συνθετών, ενώ μια νεώτερη γενιά το θεώρησε αντίστοιχο του ‘Αρχιπελάγους Γκουλαγκ’ για τη μουσική.
Το κομμάτι που ακούμε [“Gloria”] προέρχεται απο την Δεύτερη Συμφωνία του Schnittke, 1979, που στην πραγματικότητα είναι αυτό που δηλώνει ο υπότιτλός της : “Μια αόρατη λειτουργία”, με τον συνθέτη αναζητούντα καταφύγιο στην καθολική του πίστη.
Την Φιλαρμονική του Λένιγκραντ και την Χορωδία Δωματίου του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού διευθύνει [ποιος άλλος;] ο Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

The multi-faceted nature of the music Alfred Schnittke (1934-1998) wrote, impressive for a Soviet composer, was the result of relaxation of the rigid cultural ethics thanks to N. Khroustchev’s coming to power. This included more contact with Western idioms and an opportunity for experimentation unthinkable till then.
Even under such circumstances, Schnittke’s epic first Symphony, 1972, caused a scandal and … the wrath of the Composers’ Union, while a younger generation considered it equivalent to the ‘Gulag Archipelago’ for music.
The track we hear, ‘Gloria’ derives from his Second Symphony, 1979, which in fact is what its subtitle states: “An invisible Mass”, with the composer seeking refuge in his Catholic faith.
The Leningrad Philharmonic and the Chamber Choir of the Ministry of Culture is directed by [who else?] Gennady Rozhdestvensky.
