Austrian-born Carl Czerny [1791-1857] was Beethoven’s student and Liszt’s teacher. In fact, thanks to his books of studies, he is a “teacher” of all of us who ’ve studied the piano from his time on. His compositional skills were incomparable to his performing ones, which were proverbial, as was his memory: he played all Beethoven’s sonatas by heart – you just spelled the number and he ‘d start playing. It should be noted that in his era these particular works were not what they are today. They were the avant garde of the time, and Czerny was one of the few who could achieve such a feat.
We hear two excerpts from his remarkable transcription of Mozart’s Requiem for piano 4 hands.
