The Inimitable Kurt Elling with is own unique take on Christmas. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Kurt’s for years and quite honestly thought I had everything he had recorded. But somehow this one escaped my purview possibly just because I don’t usually buy Christmas recordings. But this was such a blessed find. I’m so grateful you shared this. This song is terrific as it blends a certain saudade into the Christmas music tradition. This happy/sad track with its overlapping snippets of traditional carols like memories of the past gently landing like waves on a beach. The lyrics of direction to “sing a song… look around…” and the refrain of “sing a christmas carol like the children do” suggests a wizened (or jaded) adult that is able to rise about the commercialization and craziness of the holiday and look back to (and possibly finding) the innocence, “joy and beauty” of youth before more “adult” sensibilities and responsibilities had taken over. In short, I love this song. Your post is a wonderful Christmas gift. Thank you and Merry Christmas.
Ah, Terry, I’m so happy you enjoyed this. It was a very pleasant surprise to me too and you are so very right about the ‘innocence’… Like you, I’ve also ‘avoided’ Christmas songs because of that perverse commercialization, but this…. Merry Christmas, my dear friend!
Merry Christmas my dear Greek friend. Blessing of peace to you on this day and all the days to come. β¦. and a good rub to Hera!
