Σαν σήμερα, 18 Μαΐου 1949 γεννήθηκε στο Perivale ο Rick Wakeman. Ετοίμασα ένα μικρό αφιέρωμα σ’ αυτόν, όχι μόνο γιατί θεωρείται “εμβληματικός”, ούτε μόνο για δικούς μου, βιωματικούς λόγους: ο πρώτος δίσκος του, The Six Wives Of Henry VIII είναι κυριολεκτικά “αναφοράς” στο χώρο των instrumental, keyboards – oriented άλμπουμ. Έχει επίσης καταλυτικά συμβάλλει σε στιγμές της rock ιστορίας, δείγματα των οποίων έχουμε παρακάτω [πέρα από οτιδήποτε άλλο, ήταν ο πιανίστας του D. Bowie στα άλμπουμ Space Oddity (δικό του το mellotron, στο ομώνυμο κομμάτι) και Hunky Dory]. Άλλωστε, και μετά το Six Wives, θα εξακολουθήσει να παράγει σπουδαία μουσική με τους YES, ενώ η σόλο καριέρα του θα απογειωθεί σε ένα σύμπαν  …εκθαμβωτικής κακογουστιάς, από το οποίο [μιλάμε για διάστημα τεσσεράμισι δεκαετιών] αδυνατείς να ξεχωρίσεις ένα άξιο λόγου στιγμιότυπο. Ακούμε τις τέσσερεις από τις έξη γυναίκες του Ερίκου του 8ου…

On this date, May 18, 1949, Rick Wakeman was born in Perivale.  I made a little tribute, not just because he is considered “iconic”, not just because I’ve been a big fan of his as a little boy: his first, The Six Wives Of Henry VIII, is literally a reference album in the field of instrumental, keyboards – oriented music. He has also played an important role in moments of rock history, a token of which we have below [beyond anything else, he was Bowie’s piano player on the albums Space Oddity (his are the mellotron parts, on the eponymous track) and Hunky Dory]. He would continue to produce great music with YES, after the Six Wives album, while his solo career was taking off in a universe of dazzlingly bad taste, from which [talkin’ about four and a half decades] you are unable to pick a single moment worth listening… We hear four of the of Henry VIII‘s six wives

In a BBC studio, shortly after David Bowie‘s passing, Rick Wakeman [his pianist οn Hunky Dory] dedicates this song, describing it as the most important he’s ever played on.

Δεν υπάρχει τρόπος να περιγράψω μια εμπειρία όπως αυτή της live εκτέλεσης του ‘Awaken’ από τους YES. Ζηλεύω απλώς τους ανθρώπους που βρέθηκαν εκεί. Εν πάση περιπτώσει, σε ότι αφορά το θέμα μας, το track είναι χορταστικό …και από πλευράς Wakeman.

There is no way I could describe an experience like this live performance of ‘Awaken’ by YES. I just envy the people who were there. Anyway, as far as our subject is concerned, the track has …plenty o’ Wakeman
