On this day,

Swedish composer, conductor and pianist

Carl Wilhelm Eugen Stenhammar

in Stockholm, Sweden

Stenhammar was one of the most important composers and personalities in Swedish music around 1900. After making a spectacular breakthrough in Stockholm in 1894 with his Piano Concerto No. 1 in B flat minor, Op. 1, he gained a reputation in particular as a chamber music pianist and song accompanist. Among his most significant works are six string quartets, two symphonies, songs with piano and orchestra, and large-scale choral works.

We listen to his

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 1

  1. From this concerto’s first strains I couldn’t help being reminded of Grieg’s, which came 25 years earlier. I also learned this about the Stenhammar concerto: “The original orchestral parts and autograph score were destroyed in World War II; many performances and recordings used a reconstruction of the orchestral score by Kurt Atterberg published ca.1946 (see description of Atterberg reconstruction. Eventually (in 1983 or 1990?), a copy of the manuscript full score was found by Dr. Allan B. Ho at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC (who proceeded to typeset a set of parts therefrom.)”

  3. Beautiful concerto! I was lucky to attend maestro Widlund’s performance years ago. I used to live in a city hosting an annual piano festival:) Happy days.
